Video: Democracy Now! on the Prop 8 trial and Washington State’s move towards same-sex marriage

February 9, 2012

By Adam Bink

On TV this morning with Democracy Now! were Courage Campaign’s Rick Jacobs, Josh Friedes from Equal Rights Washington and Kalil Cohen, a transgender rights organizer from Los Angeles. The program should start with the LGBT rights segment, though you can rewind to the other issues Amy Goodman et al discuss.

Kalil is so right in pointing out the amount of resources, especilally financial,,,, that have been spent,,, on the marriage issue,,,, that could be used to provide needed support to many in the LGBT community,,,

but also think about the same expense of money and energy by the christian right,,, if all that power and time was spent to assist families meet bare needs, keep families together,,,, the christian right has misused a lot of resources,,,, on an issue they have no chance at changing,,,, they could be feeding the poor and housing the homeless…

We should be fully supporting the effort to get the same sex marriage issue on the ballot in November. If we can get it on the ballot and it passes, then the prop 8 trial will become mute, and neither the 9th Circuit en blanc or the Supreme Court will rule on it because California will have same sex marriage, but the 9th Circuit Court's decision will still stand as precedent in the 9th Circuit.

If a decision is later determined to be moot, it is then vacated. It absolutely does not stand as precedent. (See: Log Cabin Republicans v. Panetta.)

Yes, it will become moot. No, NONE of the decisions so far, which have been in our favor, will stand as precedent. This is NOT a good thing! Are you not reading the replies to your posts?

We absolutely do not want to get it on the ballot right now. We want the court decisions to stand, because a ballot, even if we WON, could be overturned by another vote.

We need the court rulings to stand.

The oppostion would love nothing more than to get this on the ballot so that all our legal successes would be thrown out the window. In fact, I often wonder if it's not really the proponents who are behind this deadly scheme, hiding behind an "equality" name.

No ones civil rights should be put to a popular vote!
And why would we want to? We're winning this battle an ultimately this war.
Please stop and think about all we have to lose if we follow the path you suggest.
    DON'T VOTE ON MY RIGHTS!

Bob, your lament is well placed. Canadians are fortunate that the achievement of civil equality was as simple as it was. As a Christian, I am troubled by those faiths who seek to 'impose' their views of others. I practice in one with much cognitive dissonance. We on this site ought to desist from passing judgment on people of faith spend their money and energy. No matter how self-evident it is. G

It should have not been on the ballot in 2008. It should not be on the ballot in 2012. I am getting anxious too, be please have patience. Justice is slow, but so far it is working, and it is our best hope.

Amy Goodman is awesome. I listen to her everyday on Pacifica Radio in Houston. First time actually see her however. Thanks for the clip!
