DOMA: NOM makes stuff up to raise money. Help fight back
November 16, 2011
By Adam Bink
They really must be desperate. As reported in the comments earlier today, and received over e-mail, National Organization for Marriage said that the Respect for Marriage Act would be attached to the defense authorization bill in an attempt to pass it:
Reports out of Washington are now indicating that — just a week after forcing a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) through the Judiciary Committee on a party line vote — Senator Feinstein, Senate Judiciary Chair Pat Leahy (D-VT) and Majority Leader Harry Reid may now attach the DOMA repeal bill to the 2012 Defense Authorization bill, a bill that must be passed in order to fund our servicemen and women through the next year.
“Reports out of Washington” = making stuff up. Notice they didn’t cite any source. Beyond that, Courage Campaign and its members have been working on the Respect for Marriage Act since it was introduced in March, and our Senate allies tell us there are no plans to do so. Our friends at HRC confirmed. It’s just false. And sad.
In the meantime, we’re doing actual work to repeal DOMA.
Whatever their lies, NOM’s scare tactics just raised some coin to fund their homophobia and fight to keep DOMA around, and that’s a problem. If you want to fight back, join Courage as a Sustaining Member and contribute just $5/month or more to help fund our work to repeal DOMA.
You’ll get the button you see on the right. You’ll piss NOM off. You’ll help match whatever they’re raising today. And most of all, you’ll be speeding up the day when we end legalized discrimination against thousands and thousands of loving, committed couples.

Jeremy Hooper has a collection from the echo chamber about this story. http://www.goodasyou.org/good_as_you/2011/11/tell…

Seriously! As a marriage equality activist AND the mother of an veteran of deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan AND a parish priest may I just say "Bravo" for calling them on "making stuff up" — otherwise known as "bearing false witness" OTHERWISE known as lying … none of which are on the list of Traditional Biblical Values the NOM folks are so fond of throwing around. Trust me. I've checked.

Unfortunately, their desperation is effective. Hysteria and fear works better than reason. I get NOM's newsletters and frequent their site, as well as that of their co org. Ruth Institute.
Of course WE know they can lie, and use tactics that are deceptive to make their point. But we can't say it's not working.
There might be a few dents in a few places here and there, but we can't underestimate them or their supporters.
Nor their energy for the game.
Indeed, they are exhausting just reading their claims and complaints and unfounded accusations. There doesn't seem to be a bottom to any of them.

Heh … apparently "forcing [the bill] through the Judiciary Committee" is how you describe "voting on it" when you don't like the vote.

I'm hoping HRC et al will be notifying the mainstream press about this one. It's at least good material for Jon Stewart and Rachel Maddow.

And I'd be REALLY willing to take it to Rachel. Seriously. It wouldn't be a bother.

Too bad–I was kind of hoping it actually was being put through in an amendment to the defense authorization bill.

It is strange for me. I am a South African. This is the USA we are talking about and you are having soooo many problems with your freedom. Why is that?? The USA were the leaders in the world when it comes to freedom. What happened??

The US was always a bit behind the rest of the world when it comes to actually living up to its ideals. The British Empire abolished slavery with a vote. The US needed an extremely bloody war. And people didn't really grow up until the Civil Rights movement of the 60s

OFF TOPIC – Requesting assistance:
I'm trying to locate links to recent scholarly articles and research supporting that homosexuality is biological in origin. I've seen the articles, but alas was not clever enough to bookmark them – and have a need to present some proof in an online discussion. If anyone has some of these links, please share?
