NOM gets why next month’s Senate Judiciary Committee vote on DOMA is important

Earlier this month, I wrote a longer piece on why building a movement for DOMA repeal, starting now, is so important. It essentially boils down to the facts that momentum matters, and being in a stronger position come 2013 matters.
In NOM’s latest e-mail blast, they get it, too:

If you’re reading this email, I need your help today. Everyone.
San Francisco liberals like Diane Feinstein can’t stand the fact that the American people have voted to protect marriage in 31 consecutive state votes. So they are pushing a bill in Congress that would do an end run on voters, repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), jeopardizing every state constitutional marriage amendment and opening the door for courts to force same-sex marriage on the entire nation.
Senate Democrats have just scheduled a hearing on Senator Feinstein’s DOMA Repeal bill. Next Thursday, November 3rd, the Judiciary Committee will debate whether to recognize same-sex marriages under federal law, at the same time eliminating protections for states that do not recognize same-sex marriages.
All ten Democrats on the 18-member Judiciary Committee have already co-sponsored Sen. Feinstein’s bill. With your help, we can let them know just how out-of-touch with reality they are. Use this link to send an email to the entire Judiciary Committee, urging them to oppose the DOMA Repeal bill.
Thanks to last November’s election, and Speaker Boehner’s stalwart defense of marriage, the DOMA Repeal bill is likely dead on arrival in the House. But it’s critical that we block it in the Senate, and not allow marriage opponents to build momentum for repeal.
Setting aside their misspelling of Sen. Feinstein’s name (it’s Dianne), it is critical that we build momentum for repeal.

I am sure that Courage Campaign has a list of addresses and email for those Senators that need to hear that we support them in the repeal of DOMA. Could you maybe publish it again here, so we can do another concerted email push to let them know?

The language they use is so full of misplaced hysteria it would crack me up if it weren't so sad.
This is their core, wacky message:

That image is so………WRONGLY 1984.

I am currently listening to Tony Bennett sing "I left my heart in San Francisco" on a radio station whose tagline is 'Proud purveyor of 'San Francisco values". As a San Franciscan, i am really proud of Sen Feinstein. The culture warriors can repeat that line as often as they like. Whenever i read it or hear it out of their mouths, i think of what it actually means- we care about and embrace diversity, we care about everyone's civil rights and about the environment and about peace. SF welcomes all who embrace its 'SF values' and everyone else besides. It always has and it always will.

If you’re reading this email, I need your help today. Everyone. NOM is waaaaay far out-of-touch & does NOT live in reality. They & the rest of their selfish ilk continue to do an end run around the Constitution & American Freedom by attacking the 1st & 14th amendment rights of the American people. They want to force a religious based dictatorship on the entire nation. We cannot allow marriage opponents to build momentum for this degradation of a free & just SECULAR civilized society.

"Great Falls, VA conservatives like Brian S. Brown can't stand the fact that the American public is coming to accept the notion that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals are actual people with real feelings and are taxpaying citizens, deserving of full Constitutional protection. So they are using their well-funded PACs to hoodwink voters into: thinking that civil rights are up for popular vote by fudging opinion polls, wherein they begin with biased sampling and finish by cherry-picking their results; thinking that discriminatory legislation, such as the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the now-defunct Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy regarding military enlistment/commission are perfectly legal and deserve an outlandishly priced public defense; thinking that groups, such as the so-called National Organization for Marriage (NOM), will actually be appeased with anything less than an American theocracy (Which denomination? Theirs, of course!).
"NOM and other groups have heard that Senator Feinstein (D, CA) has bravely taken stand against the political machine, which contrives to strip good Americans of their rights, by introducing the much more aptly named Respect For Marriage Act to repeal DOMA, and will stop at nothing to stop its passage. NOM has not only fudged opinion polls, but has lied repeatedly to voters and even to their own donors in order to get their way, and get their pay.
"But you can help stop these greedy PAC charlatans! First, call your Senator and Congressperson and tell them that you believe in equality for all Americans, that your representatives in Congress should support the Respect for Marriage Act if they have not yet acted to do so, or to thank them for their support of equality if they already have. Second, if you are able, donate to the Courage Campaign (couragecampaign.org). If you can't afford to donate money at this time, volunteering your time is always appreciated. Third, tell your friends and family what NOM and their axis of anti-Americanism has planned and direct them to couragecampaign.org or prop8trialtracker.com to learn more. Fourth, when the polls open, get out there and vote! Politicians only do what the voices at the polls tell them, and they can't hear you if you're not there.

The saddest thing is that even emerging economies have competitive advantages when it comes to social equal rights aspects, i.e. Brazil, where I was born, gay marriage is completely legal and marriage + equality is for everyone.
As I am an immigrant and currently live in FL with my partner being in this relationship for almost 5 years, I don't even have the right to have him as my spouse so he can sponsor me and we can be together without every year having issues with trying to change one visa status into another one.
On top of that, as my partner's home town is a little small town in Virginia, his family doesn't know that we are in a gay relationship even though with have been living together as "best friends" under their eyes, and having to live double lives when we go on vacation for Thanksgiving, or any other holidays. The city that my partner is from people from there are very conservative and for them, being gay is a abomination.My point is, I live in my little world with my partner for 5 years, and we are trying to survive by keeping us together. Above all, I love him and he loves me, and I hope that Groups that are fighting for getting DOMA off the books wins this flight for all those married couples and for all those who lives in relationship like mine.Please, everyone, the only thing that I ask is to let us be happy and give us more Equal rights.

Remember, under those circumstances, you can marry anyone you like, as long as they are of the same sex!
