Observing Spirit Day

October 20, 2011

By Adam Bink

Which, I found out, was started one year ago on Oct. 20th to honor the memory of those who were killed or have taken their own lives due to bullying because of being LGBT.

GLAAD has a number of little things to do online to honor Spirit Day and their memory, as reported by San Diego Gay & Lesbian News here. And a number of folks in the comments have noted how Spirit Day is being marked elsewhere. And hey, even Sen. Patty Murray and her staff are observing Spirit Day.

Is anyone else observing Spirit Day?

I'm wearing purple! Few people will see it, because my life is just THAT exciting, but I'm wearing it!

Got my purple scrubs on (I look like frickin Barney the Dinosaur) and changed my Facebook pic to a purple one.
I've been amazed at how many patients have commented on my purple today….and many of them also in purple.

I think the shirt I'm wearing is purple; I'm just enough color-blind so I'm not entirely sure, but that was the intention.

wore my purple stole at Mass this morning and remembered those lost to bigotry at the prayers of the people. Only other thing purple I own is a yoga mat and I'll use that today too.

[INTERVIEW] BRITTANY MCMILLAN, TEEN FOUNDER OF #SPIRITDAY: http://act.mtv.com/posts/interview-brittany-mcmil…

"Her idea, Spirit Day, was a wild success, spreading awareness about LGBT-targeted teen bullying on a huge scale. This year's is bound to be even bigger, and you'd better believe the MTV Act offices are packed with purple garb (even the MTV logo has gone purple, too). We pinned down the campaign's busy founder, 17-year old Brittany McMillan, to find out how one person can make a difference, why straight people have a stake — and how best to rock your violet."

A bit of disturbing news out of Missouri. A teacher from Joplin School District appears to have posted some very disturbing comments on Facebook. The school board is currently investigating the situation.

I was pleasantly surprised that my boss wore purple yesterday.

But it's not Lent! The catholic church has been good about coordinating colors with the seasons, I tell you what.
