Prop 8 trial: Judge Ware dismisses two motions as moot related to Prop 8 tapes

September 27, 2011

By Adam Bink

This is fairly minor, but because of yesterday’s decision by the 9th Circuit to stay Judge Ware’s decision to release the Prop 8 tapes, today Judge Ware dismissed two motions before the district court seeking a stay because the 9th Circuit has already stayed the district court’s order. NOM is making an all out appeal to its members to write letters to Florida Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen condemning her for her support of DOMA's repeal.

The Congresswoman needs to hear from our side as well. Here is the NOM letter:

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Defects on Marriage

The Human Rights Campaign and its pro-gay marriage allies spent more than $3 million to split off four Republican senators in New York.

Led by wealthy GOP liberal Charles Munger, Jr. (the son of Warren Buffet’s business partner), they very nearly succeeded in a stealthy takeover of the California GOP platform, using money and influence to gut the platform of its traditional support for life and marriage.

And now they’ve gotten their first Republican defector on DOMA.

Last Friday, Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced that she would co-sponsor the bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act – becoming the first Republican to sign on to Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s (D-NY) legislation.

Help fight back! Using the form below, send a message to Rep. Ros-Lehtinen today, then tell your friends. We'll send a copy of your message to Speaker Boehner, too, reminding him how important marriage is to the American people.

    Message Recipients

    Ros-Lehtinen, Ileana (Republican) – Representative , Florida District 18 , FL

    Email
A copy of your message will also be sent to:

Boehner, John (Republican) – Speaker of the House , Ohio District 8 , OH

    Email
    Review the Message
    Subject:*

    Dear Rep. Ros-Lehtinen,

I am writing to express my disappointment and deep concern that you would abandon traditional Republican principles of marriage, family, and democratic self-government. Marriage is a bedrock of our society, and I urge you to re-consider your position on DOMA.

By co-sponsoring Rep. Nadler's bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, you are placing in jeopardy the laws of marriage in more the 40 states, threatening to impose same-sex marriage on voters across the nation who have resoundingly rejected same-sex marriage at every turn.

I urge you to drop your support for the repeal of DOMA, and to respect the voice of the American people, including the people of Florida, who have already voted to keep marriage as it has always been — the union of a husband and wife.

You will receive an email confirming that your message was sent. Check the box if you would also like to receive a copy of this letter.

This is how that should really read if it was to be written by a true American…..

    Dear Rep. Ros-Lehtinen,

I am writing to express my gratification and deep peace of mind that you would retain and conserve traditional American principles of marriage, family, and democratic self-government. Marriage is a bedrock of our society, and I urge you to keep strong to your position on and against DOMA.

By co-sponsoring Rep. Nadler's bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, you are placing in protection the laws of Freedom in the Constitution, choosing to grant marriage to LGBT voters and hard working tax paying American citizens. You are also protecting the thousands of children who have LGBT parents as well as the religious liberty for all faiths who support the Freedom to Marry and are LGBT affirming. Together Americans of all faiths, genders, orientations/identities, races, nationalities, (dis)abilities, conservative/liberal, and ages all across this nation have and are resoundingly rejecting the iniquitous inequality and oppression of LGBT tax paying American citizens and Straight Allies and the harming of children who are LGBT, perceived to be LGBT or have LGBT parents at every turn.

I urge you to continue your support for the repeal of DOMA, and to respect the voice of the American people, including the people of Florida LGBT and Straight, who have already paid their dues to society in the form of taxes and continue to do so as it has always been required of them — Respect marriage as the union of a husband and husband, husband and wife, or wife and wife. Respect American freedom for ALL Americans. Respect religious liberty for ALL faiths not just anti-gay people of faith. Respect Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Respect the Constitution. Respect real and honest American values of freedom, equality, peace, love, and unity. Support the Respect for Marriage Act."

'San Francisco Military' Slammed By Elaine Donnelly In 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Debate

  • 9. Sheryl, Mormon Mom  |  September 27, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Argh, don't know why I read those articles. In response to Ms. Donnelly's question of "how long would homosexual couples have to be committed to each other to receive benefits?" I'd answer, "the same length of time heterosexual couples have to be committed to each other to receive benefits!" And, as we all know, in some states (at least Nevada), that is way less than 24 hours. And I really do wonder what she means by "San Francisco Military." Certainly sounds like a slam to any member of the military from San Francisco. Wonder if Ms. Donnelly is willing to put her life on the line and serve in the armed forces to protect our freedoms.

"[Cooper] did not present any supporting statements from the witnesses. Prop. 8's opponents, on the other hand, are circulating a comment from the sponsors' chief witness, traditional marriage advocate David Blankenhorn, who said in an online exchange last week that he "never felt physically threatened" by the presence of cameras at the trial."

I'm here to vent for a minute…..please indulge me.
My husband Robert's father passed away last evening after a long battle with Alzheimer's……I called our favorite airline United to book two bereavement fare seats. The agent took all the information and than near the end of the booking he informed me that the discount only applied to Robert as we are not 'REALLY MARRIED'
I am so sad and so angry. Once again to the back of the bus for us second class citizens of this great country
    UGH!!!!!!

Thank you for letting me vent…….

A Truly New Class: Gay Cadets Forge Path at Military Academies
With the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," a new batch of young people wanting to serve their country face newly integrated military academies. http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2011/09/2…

"With a new school year comes a new crop of cadets, but with the repeal of DADT, this will be the first time in history that high school graduates entering the handful of military academies across the country will be able to openly disclose that they are gay or lesbian. Meade Warthen, a spokesman for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, says it is the academy's policy "to treat all members with dignity and respect, and to ensure the maintenance of good order and discipline." Warthen added that the academy would continue to recruit the best possible cadets, regardless of their sexual orientation."

This is just awful, Mark. And, yes, yet another example of how being treated as second-class citizens affects peoples' lives.

If you want to try to fix this, you might give a call to United corporate and see if someone there is willing to intervene. I realize this may not be something you want to do with so much on your mind.

Hugs and love to you and Robert at this time of loss.

  • 18. David  |  September 28, 2011 at 9:52 am

If you want to send an message of support to Rep. Ros-Lehtinen you will need to look up a zip code from her district as her server will only accept certain zip codes.

Well THERE'S an oxymoron if I've ever heard one! LOL

  • 20. AnonyGrl  |  September 28, 2011 at 10:21 am

I am so sorry for your loss, and for the grief that the airline is putting you through! Shame on them!

Hugs to both of you and know that a lot of us out here are thinking of you!

  • 21. Ann S.  |  September 28, 2011 at 10:36 am

I'm so very sorry, Mark, both for your and Robert's loss and for your shabby treatment by United Airlines.

  • 22. Sam_Handwich  |  September 28, 2011 at 10:49 am

I'd be quite interested to know what United's OFFICIAL POLICY is on this. You should keep calling them until you get a concrete answer … and ask them to send the policy to you so we can make a stink about it, if it is indeed discriminatory.

I find it very difficult to believe that their policy makes a distinction about "really married" couples verses "not really married" couples. If you have a marriage license, then you are REALLY MARRIED.

  • 23. James Sweet  |  September 28, 2011 at 11:22 am

+1 on Sam's suggestion to pursue this further… if you're up for it, of course. Maybe one of the site mods could help you get attention for this, if you are interested.

Neither DOMA nor any other law prevents United from voluntarily recognizing your marriage, and I imagine the annual cost of them doing so has got to be pretty small in the scheme of things. Even putting aside right and wrong, it just seems even from a pragmatic perspective this should be a no-brainer for them….

  • 24. Mark M. (Seattle)  |  September 28, 2011 at 11:43 am

Per their web site they state they offer the discount for DPs….I am awaiting a call back from a customer service rep….I am NOT gonna let this go!

Thank you all for the condolences :-)

  • 25. Ann S.  |  September 28, 2011 at 1:23 pm

I hope you set them straight (no pun intended). Perhaps you just got an undertrained service rep the first time. Good luck, and hugs to you.

  • 26. peterplumber  |  September 28, 2011 at 3:45 pm

In the year 2000, my partner & I were vacationing in Washington DC when we got a call that my grandmother had died. We had flown to DC on United and had round trip tickets. United would do NOTHING for us to get us home early. In fact, they wanted us to book a one way trip home, and get no refund at all on the other half of our round trip tickets.

Then we called Delta airlines. Delta was very accommodating and booked us special rate fare on short notice and ti was cheaper than the one way fare United was charging.

I fly Delta whenever possible now.

  • 27. James Sweet  |  September 29, 2011 at 6:07 am

Good on you for following up, especially in this tough time. Just like I said, even putting aside right and wrong, it makes a lot of pragmatic sense for them to do this, since not doing it is a potential ticking PR timebomb, and doing it costs them so little. Bummer that it is still too expensive! Very sorry!
