Colorado Senate passes legislation legalizing civil unions
March 24, 2011
By Adam Bink
Great news out of the Rocky Mountain State today:
The legislation moves to the House, where I’m told by sources in the state that it will be a tougher fight. Next week, Courage Campaign will be asking its members to contact their legislators.
If you’re in a committed, same-sex relationship in Colorado, or know a couple who is, please drop me a line at adam@couragecampaign.org. We’d like to work with you!

YAY!!! I'm so excited to see this today. So much is going thru my head right now. What a surprise Colorado can be a very conservative state. This proves anything is possible.

For those in Colorado, I have a question: once this passes, how likely is the governor to sign it?

According to the article in the Denver Post the Gov has said he would sign it into law.

quote from the D. Post:
Steadman, who is gay, choked back tears at times.
He stood in front of a stack of eight volumes of Colorado's revised statutes and said his bill simply allows gay couples access to laws already on the books.
"I can assure you if this were to become law and couples were to form civil unions, the sun will still rise over this great state of Colorado," he said.
"This will not cause the family or society to crumble. This will only make the families in our society and state stronger."

Couldn't we at least help mount an email campaign to contact Colorado House of Representatives members, even if we don't live in Colorado? On their One-Colorado.org website, they have a "take action" tab and under that tab there is a "contact your legislator" with a link entitled "find your legislator here." We could write emails telling the representatives how often we visit Colorado for skiing & summer vacations, how much we spend there and how much we would appreciate their vote. Colorado is like a blue island in a sea of red, they border Utah, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. Lets help them right now!

Am I missing something?

Straight Ally is refering to the fact that NOM lies when talking about marriage equality, saying that they only want to reserve the word 'marriage' for opposite sex couples and that they are really fine with equal rights for gays in the form of comprehensive domestic partnership laws etc. BUT – at the same time, in other states where DP laws are pending, NOM aggressively cacmpaigns AGAINST THOSE TOO. Becasue the truth is they really just want to harm LGBTs and their families by denying them equal rights any way they can.

Question –
Do we know when the CO house will take this up?

I've heard Maggie say that civil unions/domestic partnerships are a slippery slope but 'if structured the right way' there's nothing wrong with them. She was in no way specific about what she considers acceptable/unacceptable, so I assume that if they're toothless she's ok with it. Go figure.

I am from CO and love it so much, but now I live in CA. I would be thrilled to help get this passed. If anybody has any bright ideas about how to do that (beyond just emailing my people there and posting about this on facebook), I'd be glad to hear suggestions. I do hope Courage will do some kind of email campaign.
Thanks!

I have mixed feelings on this. I guess it's better than nothing, but it sure as heck isn't marriage. Separate is NOT equal.
But it will be interesting to see the reactions from the usual opponents of same-sex marriage. Civil unions pose a sticky problem for NOM and their allies: they keep claiming that Americans don't support same-sex marriage–and sure as heck don't want to admit that American support ANY kind of legal protection or recognition–but in reality the only way they can get a strong majority of Americans to oppose same-sex marriage is by offering civil unions as an alternative (and then counting that support for civil unions as "opposition"). Yet they continue to oppose even civil unions. By forcing people to make the choice between something and nothing, with no middle ground, I think they're actually helping to drive people to support full marriage rights for same-sex couples. They can pick and choose all the polls they want, and complain about polling bias, but the simple fact is that the polls show a clear trend towards increasing support for full marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Meanwhile they don't want to hear it, and don't want anybody else to hear it either. I've tried posting similar remarks to their blog several times, and other comments disagreeing with them, but they never make it past "moderation".

I'm a Coloradan! I'm engaged to my lovely bride and we plan on getting hitched this summer (regardless) and we are holding our breath right now waiting to hear what the house says. Gov. Hickenlooper said he would sign the bill! He rides in the Pride parade every year.

Please do! We need all the help we can get in Colorado right now. The house is controlled by republicans so it will be close.

I would like to know this too. I can't seem to find any info on the upcoming House hearing/vote.
