Here's what Chick-Fil-A defenders don't understand: The more they shoot the messenger, the more we're going to dig up new messages!

Jeremy did a great job of pushing hard here -Adam

First some background:

The WinShape Retreat Center on Berry College’s mountain campus is just the kind of development to advance Martha Berry’s vision, said Don “Bubba” Cathy, senior vice president of Chick-fil-A, at the retreat center’s grand opening on Wednesday.

Chick-fil-A has spent about $18 million to renovate Berry’s old Normandy buildings — the long-time home of the school’s dairy — during the past year. The company now will run the WinShape Retreat Center, primarily as a marriage seminar and ministry center.

“We felt like God has given us a vision for this,” said Cathy, who led Chick-fil-A’s effort to find a use for the 70-year-old buildings.

WinShape Retreat Center to help mend marriage [Rome News-Tribune]

This is the same retreat center that hosts an annual Marriage Comission seminar, featuring invited guests like Maggie Gallagher, Jennifer Roback Morse, Focus on the Family president Jim Daly, and many more who fight in the public square against equality for gay people. A seminar where Chick-Fil-A higher ups both speak and receive personal shout outs (see videos of that here). At a retreat that was born out of Chick-Fil-A profits: Profits you contribute to anytime you eat at one of the chain’s many locations.

So why are we bringing up more Chick-Fil-A stuff here and now? Well, we honestly didn’t want to. But to be perfectly honest: We’re pretty tired of the disingenuous way the company and its defenders keep acting like we were wacky and out-of-line for simply letting people know about the company’s ties to anti-gay advocacy. And we’re also getting annoyed with the way they keep making it all about the one Pennsylvania Family Institute sponsorship, when we’ve brought out soooooooooo much more than just that (and have clearly shown why that particular sponsorship does have demonstrable anti-gay advocacy attached via both its local and national parent).

Here are just two recent examples of defenders denying anti-gay attachment and generally sidestepping the actual message we brought forth:

“A local Pennsylvania Chick-fil-A decided to donate some box-lunches to a seminar called ‘The Art of Marriage: Getting to the Heart of God’s Design,’” reports Family Research Council (FRC) president Tony Perkins. “Since then, the fast-food chain has come under attack from liberals, who say these sandwiches are somehow a political statement against homosexuality.”

But Perkins points out that seminar sponsor Michael Geer sees nothing wrong with the donations and has issued a statement encouraging people to “applaud institutions that want to strengthen marriage.”

Anti-homosexual chicken sandwiches? [ONN]

Just last week, homosexual bloggers squawked that the Pennsylvania Family Institute was sponsoring what they called an “anti-gay,” “anti-equality” conference; and worse yet, that a prominent food chain, Chick-fil-A, was a co-sponsor. Of course, the conference was no such thing. The conference’s title is “The Art of Marriage, Getting to God’s Design.”

I happen to know the founder of Chick-fil-A—Truett Cathy—a wonderful, outstanding Christian businessman. Why should they be bashed for supporting a good thing—promoting healthy marriages?

Free to Speak [Chuck Colson's Breakpoint Commentary]

Issue-shirking asides that are especially annoying considering new evidence that was just sent this site’s way in the past 24 hours. Evidence that makes it even more abundantly clear that our loves, our lives, our families, our marriages are not part of this particular company’s vision:

201101260925

Bottom, undeniable line: Gay consumers are not included in the company’s view of love, family, and marriage. You, as a consumer, may be perfectly fine with that. Heck, you as a consumer might be happy about that. That’s all up to you. Personally, as a vegetarian in a city where Chick-Fil-A is as available as Dodo-Fil-A, I wasn’t likely to be found in one of the company’s stores anyway. So I don’t have a personal hen in this fryer — I’m leaving the consumer choice completely to the fast foodie’s personal discretion, and leaving the outreach choices completely up to the company.

But this site, as a defender of a societal standard that does include gay people, sees it fit to let you know what’s all crunching underneath that pickled bun. And the more the Chuck Colsons and Tony Perkins of the world paint us as radical squawkers who hate free speech for simply utilizing our own, the more compelled we will feel to defend our name. Our well-being. Our truth.

Ah yes, the Bible "standard of marriage." The Bible never defines marriage explicitly. However, when it tells us Solomon had "700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines" (I Kings 11:3) and it has no problem with that other than it expresses displeasure because some wives do not follow his religion, you really get the impression what right-wing religious bigots rant and rave about has a real disconnect with what the Bible really teaches.

They also do not want anyone who is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender working for them, and if you do happen to luck out and get a job at a CFA, do not expect to be promoted into management if you are LGBT. And yet, they want us to spend our money there. Well, no can do!

I spent a week at CFA headquarters in Atlanta and their interpretation of the Bible is preached verbally and in print everywhere. I applaud them for being consistent and open in their discrimination and narrow-view of the world. Funny thing though. I met many of the top manager in their company….not all are straight…DADT of CFA anyone?

How interesting… if Chick-Fil-A is not at all involved with this event, they just donated some lunches, why on earth is Tony Perkins the one who is coming out so strongly in their defense?

If it is just a passing relationship, all Tony should have to say is "no, nothing here to really comment about, they donated some lunch, that is all we know."

Yet he writes a whole essay about them. Odd, don't you think? (yes… that was sarcasm… )

Promoting the sham "religious belief" of homophobia, redefining unequal treatment under the law as "love" and smearing gay families as somehow less worthy, wholesome and valued by God does absolutely NOTHING to strengthen the massive problems with heterosexual marriage in which 50% of the participants can't even remain married. Stick with MARRIAGE, Chick-Fil-A, not exclusion, division and counterfeit Christian "love!"

We are not being a bully. We are standing up to a bully, which is not at ALL the same thing.

CFA is a major supporter of anti-gay organizations. Their hiring and promotion practices with regards to LGBT people are suspect. They preach against marriage equality.

Can you think of any reason we should buy their products and support those activities?

  • 41. sickntired08  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:12 pm

bull crap… we are being bullies, and everyone see it.. these companies have the right to support whom they want.

And by the way, the ness is truly uncalled for.

  • 44. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    blame the victim…just saying…..

Hi sickntired08 : ) As a former CFA manager, and one who has attended many training classes & spent a week at the CFA headquarters in Atlanta for manager training, I can confirm they are indeed bullies…toward anyone that doesn't subscribe toward their interpretation of biblical ways. They seem kind and friendly in many ways but if you don't go to the "optional" prayer meetings and "hallelujah sessions" (disguised as a music concert), as I opted not to do, you get called out on it and encouraged to become "part of the team"…. They give away Ford cars (I helped my niece earn a new mustang), trips, college money…but that comes with a price of cooperation, assimilation and loyalty and implied conversion. When in Atlanta I felt I was the Tom Cruise character in "The Firm"…very scary! Hat's off to your Lesbian acquaintance, she must be a very confident woman. CFA is a very patriarchal company too…women have to work VERY hard to be accepted in the clan. There are fantastic individuals that work for CFA…they give away much to charitable causes, give all employees Sunday's off, the company as a whole is VERY discriminatory.

  • 45. anonygrl  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:39 pm

that "ness" was "rudeness" when I typed it. :)

  • 46. Hank (NYC)  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Well if I'm reading the article correctly – CFA didn't just donate sandwiches to this place – the whole retreat was created by CFA – lot stock and barrell as a place for them to spout their religious beliefs.

I for one can't imagine go to church at CFA or M'Ds or Jack in the Box LOL.

In this day and age – yes we do have to stand up and point out to our straight allies everywhere this bigotry lies – no matter how small it may seem. It usually runs very deep to the core.

It is time we voice our Free Speech as well as our free feet – and walk to another place that we can support and that supports us and our famlies – or at the VERY LEAST isn't taking our money and using it take our rights away from us or keep them from being equal with all other tax paying citizens.

    good morning anonygrl : )

  • 48. sickntired08  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:49 pm

who ever said that all companies must be neutral?? s

  • 49. anonygrl  |  January 26, 2011 at 11:57 pm

"bull crap… we are being bullies, and everyone see it.. these companies have the right to support whom they want. "

They do have a right to support who they want. And we have a right to not support them.

No one here is saying that they should be PREVENTED from doing what they do. They can give every last dollar they make to NOM if they want. CFA can march up and down carrying signs that say "God hates homosexuals", just as the Westboro Baptist Church does. And I will support their RIGHT to do so.

However, these acts have consequences. And while they absolutely have the right to sponsor WinShape, and to preach against homosexuality, they need to understand that we are going to call them on it. We are going to stop giving them OUR money to do it with, and we are going to point out to others who may have missed it exactly what we think is wrong about what they choose to do.

And that is perfectly within our rights.

And by the way, we are not saying "anyone who works for CFA is sick and going to hell" (which would be the equivalent of what they are saying about us). We are merely saying "We do not support this corporate entity as it attempts to oppress us."

Thus, we are NOT the bullies. We are standing up to a group that wants to make us second class citizens and telling them we do not accept their bigotry.

If you want the truth of the matter, I think you are a homophobic CFA board member pretending to be LGBT!

I am not going to make that assumption, Richard, but I would like to point out that if sickntired08 IS from CFA, that we don't mind. Do come in and join the debate. Present your side of it (please be civil doing so) and you can be open and up front, no need to hide by claiming to be part of the LGBT community if you are not.

We appreciate other viewpoints here. We may argue strongly against them, but if they are presented well, we learn from them and will try to teach others how we feel in the process.

And if sickntired08 is a member of the LGBT community, and feels strongly that a boycott of a company that is so strongly anti-homosexual is wrong, that is ok too. Explain why you think so, please. The more we know, the better prepared we are to deal with the world as it exists around us.

  • 60. Ronnie  |  January 27, 2011 at 1:23 am

So letting our community of both be aware of what companies & organizations are homophobic, anti-gay, anti-freedom, anti-Equality, & anti-marriage (w/a superiority complex) so that we can make the decision for ourselves to boycott them & let our friends & family know the same information…. is bullying now?…….

I wonder if that would mean that those who were fighting for their Civl Rights against those companies & organizations that were racist, anti-freedom, anti-Equality, & yes anti-marriage were just bullying, as well, those white people (w/a superiority complex) during the Montgomery Bus Company Boycotts, & the Greensboro sit-ins at Woolsworth…hmmmmmmm…… ; ) …Ronnie

The most outrageous quote I've seen in all the news reports is the following in a BBC account ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12295718 )

The editor of the newspaper that published the names and photos claimed he didn't want people attacked, "We want the government to hang people who promote homosexuality, not for the public to attack them."

  • 63. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 27, 2011 at 2:03 am

Like it makes a difference who kills us? NOT! But then again, I guess it does. When the government kills us, it makes it that much worse!

  • 64. Ann S.  |  January 27, 2011 at 2:05 am

I just got this in an email from AllOut: http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=331fc1df335e7…

We just found out that one of the leading figures in the LGBT movement in Uganda, David Kato, was murdered yesterday in his home. David was a tireless fighter for democracy and equality in Uganda, and as a result the frequent target of the government and press (including the notorious "HANG THEM" campaign by a national newspaper).1 2 This is an awful tragedy and a terrible loss to our movement. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his friends and family.

This terrible news also makes clear what's at stake for Brenda, the woman we wrote to you about yesterday. She has also been outspoken against the Ugandan government and has been publicly targeted because she is a lesbian. If sent back to Uganda, Brenda is in real danger – and we now have less than 24 hours to stop her deportation.

If you have not sent a letter to UK Home Secretary Theresa May, please take a moment and add your voice. And if you have, we desperately need you to tell everyone you know to do the same:

  • 65. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 27, 2011 at 2:08 am

makes you wonder if its a typo…sheesh!

    from the article:
He was killed by someone who came in his house with a hammer, meaning anyone else could be the next target.
    : (

  • 66. anonygrl  |  January 27, 2011 at 2:08 am

It doesn't make any difference at all to those who are dead…

But if the government, which exists for the single purpose of protecting its citizens from harm, is the one killing us, it is time for a new government.

My hope is that the changes we effect here in equality will continue to spread world wide. And, tragically, while it will ALWAYS be too late to save some people, we will keep doing what we can do here to help there.

  • 67. Ronnie  |  January 27, 2011 at 2:23 am

You beat my too it Richard….I was just going to post this….To the anti-gay "Christians"….thank you (not really….cringes) for perpetuating this kind of hateful & inhuman behavior….Don't forget according to the Homophobic Ugandans, they are doing "God's work" by legislating the "Genocide Bill"…you know, with the help of some American Evangelical Missionaries…one (cough) Scott Lively (cough) in which moved to Massachusetts & failed to do a proper background check when hiring a sex-offender to manage his coffee shop…The sex-offender was also living above the coffee shop….creepy…just saying…… : I ….Ronnie

  • 68. Jon  |  January 27, 2011 at 3:45 am

"We felt like God has given us a vision for this"

All right now. Let's get this clear. God gave you a vision, fine. You felt God gave you a vision, also fine; you accept that others didn't see the same vision. But you felt "like" God gave you a vision? You had a feeling that you believe was similar to the one you think you'd feel if you got a vision?

Folks, either you got a vision or you didn't.

Don't make me come down there.

It is lovely being part of a community who can use reason, experience, knowledge and wisdom to combat ignorance rather than resort to a name-calling match which is prevalent on many other boards.

Obvious SacBee troll is obvious …

If you are doing business with the public, there are laws (as you are fully aware) that require that you be neutral.

(This particular troll is well known to me from the Sacramento Bee … and has decided to come here to try to pretend to be LGBT. He is ticked off because his catering business falls under the Unruh Act and he wants to be able to deny services to LGBT people because of his religion.)

    Bless your heart, MB.

    Love,
    Fiona

Gregory, I'm sure you're right that sickntired is long gone & probably won't be back. Even so, it didn't feel OK to let his rudeness to anonygirl pass without saying something to him.

It IS wonderful to have so many intelligent, caring, & giving folks here. Wish all sites were so good!

  • 73. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 27, 2011 at 4:55 am

….interesting….glad also that many here keep track of details and persons…keeps others(and ME!) in line : )

  • 74. JoeRH  |  January 27, 2011 at 5:02 am

Chick-Fil-A is ridiculously expensive for what you get anyway. I had never been around them until I moved to Austin, TX and figured they were closed on Sundays for religious purposes. I always assume religious organizations are anti-gay (yes, unfair), so I stopped going there a long time ago, but now I do feel justified in my decision. That Polynesian sauce sucks too.

  • 75. Kathleen  |  January 27, 2011 at 5:06 am

That should be our new rallying cry: "You support bigotry and your Polynesian sauce sucks, too!" :D

  • 76. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 27, 2011 at 5:09 am

Yea, the Sunday's closed thing was celebrated by the conservatives who work there but very frustrating for the loyal customers who didn't have the same religious viewpoint. Causes contention too in Mall locations as others stores are not allowed the option to close on Sundays…only CFA.

  • 77. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 27, 2011 at 5:11 am

And how many malls would let a Jewish-owned store close from noon on Friday to 72 minutes after sundown on Saturday to observe Sabbath?

  • 78. Mark M - Seattle  |  January 27, 2011 at 5:15 am

    LOL!!!

  • 79. Rhie  |  January 27, 2011 at 7:15 am

Agreed. Free association cuts both ways. The company has every right under the Constitution to sponsor whatever they want. None of us here are saying otherwise – and I know you aren't either!

But, that same law that protects them protects us. We have every right to say we think this marriage seminar and viewpoint is disgusting and wrong. We have every right not to eat there and to publish this blog.

  • 80. Rhie  |  January 27, 2011 at 7:33 am

I agree Anonygrl. I am honestly curious to know why someone would have a problem with others showing their displeasure at a company. I want to hear their reasons, if they are presented politely and logically.

Maybe sickntired can elaborate on their personal connection to CFA.

  • 81. Rhie  |  January 27, 2011 at 8:04 am

    Ooooh. Thanks!

  • 82. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 27, 2011 at 10:04 am

Oh wow! I read article…thanks for posting. I love to hear schools and others taking action to avoid supporting discrimination:
The university decided to remove Chick-fil-A as a campus vendor after news that a Pennsylvania franchise will be donating food for an event hosted by a known anti-homosexual group.

  • 83. Rich  |  January 28, 2011 at 4:11 am

funny…Chick Fil A is opening a new location near my work – they just brought us a bunch of free sandwiches..I asked the manager that was delivering them if he knew what type of anti gay events his corporate sponsored..he said he'd have his boyfriend research it.

  • 87. Rhie  |  January 29, 2011 at 8:13 am

I first read that as "gay ink" as in the stuff in pens.

  • 88. defeatobama  |  February 5, 2011 at 8:04 am

I may be missing the part where they are attempting to oppress you but I've yet to read anywhere in their corporate mission that states they intend to covertly or overtly oppress anyone.

  • 89. defeatobama  |  February 5, 2011 at 8:06 am

You cause might be taken more seriously if you stop referring to it as a civil rights issue. This is and always has been a civil privilege issue.

  • 90. defeatobama  |  February 5, 2011 at 8:08 am

Last laugh is on you. It is open again. Care to guess why?

  • 91. Ronnie  |  February 5, 2011 at 8:09 am

    NO…this is and has always been a civil rights issue….nice try though…. 8 / ….Ronnie

What the heck!! Chick-fil-A is a great company and a great restaurant — leave them alone!

Who cares that they don't "support" your lifestyle — Do you support their lifestyle?!!! Their not attacking the gay lifestyle, so stop making this great company look bad.
I don't support the gay lifestyle either… Should I now be thrown in jail or penalized somehow for that?

The truth is, Chick-fil-A is a shining light in the American corporate world. They have no debt, they give university scholarships to their employees, they help married couples improve their marriages and family, they give to the poor in other countries, they pay better than other similar businesses, and a whole lot more.

The other truth is this: Rsearch has shown that the more dis-functional a family unit is, the more likely the children in that family are to turn to the homosexual lifestyle. One of Chick-fil-A biggest goals is to improve family relationships — This may be one reason homosexuals don't like them too much!

  • 97. Ronnie  |  February 5, 2011 at 9:16 am

    "leave them alone!"….MAKE US!!!!

"don’t “support” your lifestyle"…what "lifestyle"?…..Fashionista?…..Bohemian?….Goth?…Country?…Preppy?….Joke?….Academic?….Geek?…. Greek(Frat/Sorority)?….There is no such thing as a "gay lifestyle" even though you used that made up fallacious term…..

What research?….funny, this "research" wasn't provided for any of the court cases all over the country where this so called research you speak of would come of use..

Chick-Fill-A-Hate does not improve families…..they attack, belittle & demean all families that do not form & look how they demand….& don't bow down to their delusional heterosexist supremacist Theocratic dictatorship…….nice try though….. 8 / ….Ronnie

  • 98. JonT  |  February 5, 2011 at 10:10 am

Gawd, what is this troll weekend or something?

Dude, if I oppose a companies stance on something, I have every right to boycott them and make a big stink about it. It's called the first amendment. Read it sometime.

And 'gay lifestyle'? What, are you like 12 or something?

'The other truth is this: Rsearch has shown…'

    Citation or fuck off please.
