Coming out swinging in Rhode Island

January 11, 2011

By Adam Bink

According to the Providence Journal, NOM is launching a $100,000 ad campaign aimed at preventing the legislature and newly-inaugurated Gov. Chafee from legalizing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The local chapter of the National Organization for Marriage is launching a $100,000 TV advertising campaign aimed at defeating the legalization of same-sex marriage in Rhode Island.

The first TV ad scheduled for airing on Tuesday will challenge “Governor Lincoln Chaffee’s claim to have a mandate to redefine marriage,” according to a news release issued by the group that misspelled new Governor Lincoln D. Chafee’s name.

“Lincoln Chaffee got just 36% of the vote in the recent election, and fewer popular votes than the Cool Moose Party’s candidate for Lieutenant Governor,” Christopher Plante, executive director of NOM-RI, said in the release. “Our message is that getting 36% of the vote is no mandate to redefine the institution of marriage for all of Rhode Island society.”

A colleague told me the ad was up on their YouTube Rhode Island page, but then was “removed by the user”. I’ll keep an eye on it and will post when it comes out. If anyone sees it, please drop in the comments.

As in New Hampshire, rest assured we’re keeping a close eye on things and finding constructive ways we can help. Of course, NOM will have to compete with one part of the calvary:

The NOM-RI ad began airing on the same day that Marriage Equality-RI plans an event at the State House, to deliver “thousands of postcards” supporting same-sex marriage to lawmakers as they arrive for 4 p.m. House and Senate sessions.

More to come.

I'm still teary from watching the Rachel Maddow segment that Ronnie posted in the last thread. Then I read about what NOM is up to, and all I can think is why??? Why can't we all just let others love each other as they choose? Why pour all this energy into discrimination???

It is amazing that so much energy should be devoted to getting in the way of loving couples, isn't it?

As has been pointed out before, think of how much good that $100K could do actually supporting marriage – offer counseling to couples in crisis, help reduce poverty (financial stress being a known major reason for couples getting divorced), offer drug/alcohol rehab to family members dealing with addiction (again, a major reason for families breaking up), the list goes on and on. This would actually help children and families! The only people helped by this c*&p that NOM does are the ones making their living as professional bigots.

I agree – truly horrible. But we all know it's not really about anything but the money-money-money-more-money for them. Their very everything depends upon them maintaining the followers with money that houses, clothes and feeds the NOM staff. Purely pathetic.

    Finally!

Arizona shootings: Bill would provide 'funeral protection zone'

Democrats in the Arizona Legislature say they will introduce a bill Tuesday to create a "funeral protection zone" to keep protesters from disrupting the funerals of those killed in the mass shooting near Tucson.

The Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas responded to the shooting by posting a video on the YouTube website, saying, "Thank God for the violent shooter."

He vowed to have his band of followers picket at the funerals.

State Sen. Paula Aboud, D-Tucson, said Democrats are asking to waive legislative rules so the bill can be debated and passed in one day, in time for funerals that will begin this week.

The bill is patterned after an Ohio law that establishes a 300-foot protection zone around a funeral location from one hour before the event until one hour after it.

"They want to protest at the gravesite of a 9-year-old girl, and we want to stop him," Aboud said.

In addition, the Republican and Democratic parties in Pima County are urging people to help form a human barricade along the funeral routes to protect the victims' families from Phelps and his small band of vocal protesters.

I wonder if it was taken down because the morons at the National Organization for "Marriage" spelled Governor Chafee's name wrong in their stupid little propaganda ad in which they spent waaaaaay to much money that IS for a FACT needed in other places such as to help the homeless, hungry, unemployed, uninsured & more…..NOM=FAIL……<3….Ronnie

Please call, stating your support for marriage equality.

@Ann: For the people who don't make career of hating, I honestly think it's connected to some kind of "Pecking Order" instinct we have.

It's about people identifying someone they feel is "worse" than them, in order to feel better about themselves.

Just wondering … does NOM intend do anything to acutally support heterosexual marriages? Or do they strictly work against marriage equality?

Also, their website mentions the NOM Educational Fund, which they claim is engaged in "pro-marriage education and research," but it doesn't say much else. Anyone have any info on this branch of NOM?

  • 12. Bill  |  January 11, 2011 at 5:03 am

NOM spelled Chafee's name incorrectly in the first ad.

Perhaps that is why it was pulled?

They do not do anything pro marriage. Only anti-gay marriage.

The Ruth Institute (an offshoot) supposedly does pro-marriage stuff, but I think they reach an audience of about six people. Their leader, who calls herself Dr. J, is a middle aged woman who says "cool!" a lot and looks like a total dork doing it. She seems to think she is connecting with youth. I am, frankly, embarrassed on her behalf.

  • 20. Straight For Equalit  |  January 11, 2011 at 5:44 am

It's hard to believe this isn't from SNL!

Does she claim that global warming is caused by hot gay sex? Oh, I forgot. She probably denies that there is any global warming. After all, the Bible doesn't mention it.

  • 21. chris from co  |  January 11, 2011 at 5:51 am

Does she think that god only sends signs when America changes, where was the dead birds and fish when The UK Isreal, Sweden, Spain, etc… allowed homosexuals to serve openly. She is a fool but what's worse is some one was listening to that and believed it.

  • 22. Kathleen  |  January 11, 2011 at 5:52 am

According to Rep. John Shimkus (R-Il.), we don't have to worry about global warming, not because the Bible doesn't mention it, but because God specifically promises it won't happen. This is from U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment in March '09.

I'd prefer public policy be based on science, but then I haven't been elected by the good people of Illinois.

Unbelievable! This is really scary! Since God has promised that the world won't end by man's doing, we don't need to worry about nuclear bombs, etc. How can we turn over power for deciding the U.S.'s future to people like this?

  • 25. Kathleen  |  January 11, 2011 at 6:08 am

It gets worse. This, from his official House website:

    01/07/11
Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) was named to four of the six subcommittees of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Friday. Shimkus will chair the Subcommittee on Environment and Economy and also sit on the Subcommittees on Communications and Technology; Energy and Power; and Health.

    (bolding mine)

  • 26. Sarah  |  January 11, 2011 at 6:32 am

This irks me so much. Can you imagine what would happen if a congresswoman/man got up there and started reading from the Jewish or Muslim, or any other, holy book?? (I know what they're called but knew I would probably mess up the spelling so this was safer) :)

They would be called a terrorist, splashed upon the radio- and newswires and demonized! This is hypocrisy! I am a Christian, but hate when people discount science, which God gave us, for the "infallible" word of God that was written in another context.

  • 27. Kathleen  |  January 11, 2011 at 6:37 am

Sadly, I think we need to be prepared for a horrible assault on science and rationality in the 112th Congress.

  • 29. Sheryl, Mormon Mothe  |  January 11, 2011 at 6:48 am

So true, Kathleen. I simply do not understand how allowing people of the same sex to marry each other will in anyway be a harm to society. Do these idiots (not the ones in charge, they know exactly what they are doing, lining their own pockets) that support these organizations really believe that allowing my son to marry the man he loves will really impact their life. Do they believe that because it is legal, their straight children will decide to become a homosexual? Will their own marriages fall apart (well, maybe if they've been living a lie, but that will probably happen anyway). I just don't understand all of this hatred toward the LGBT community.

    Sheryl, Mormon Mother

  • 30. Sheryl, Mormon Mothe  |  January 11, 2011 at 6:54 am

That 300 feet would be from both the funeral site (be it a funeral home or a church) and the burial site entrance?

Personally, 300 feet is not far enough but is a start.

“Our message is that getting 36% of the vote is no mandate to redefine the institution of marriage for all of Rhode Island society.”

That's so funny. 36% is the same percent of Californias population that voted for prop 8. But they keep calling that 'the will of the people'

Gah, it's like a bad movie or a bad board game. The Foxx is in charge of the educational chicken coop. Issa conducting kangaroo courts and calling it oversight. Bachmann and intelligence just don't belong in the same sentence. Shimkus leaving the environment in the Lord's hands.

I'd rather play a nice game of Clue. All Miss Scarlett did was kill Mr. Boddy with the lead pipe in the conservatory.

“Our message is that getting 36% of the vote is no mandate to redefine the institution of marriage for all of Rhode Island society.”

Except that in addition to the 36.1% vote for Chafee, Caprio got 23%, and Block got 6.5%… and all three said they'd sign a same-sex marriage bill. Same-sex marriage-supporting candidates drew about twice the vote of the same-sex marriage opposer.

I appreciate AZ passed this law to prevent Phelps @ company to protest, and agree with it….Wishing someone would pass an emergency law to allow equality of marriage on a federal level…to prevent more suffering and death of LGBT persons –what could be more of an emergency than that !? : /

  • 49. grod  |  January 11, 2011 at 8:47 am

On a marginally related topic, but one which might get reflected in RI's legislation:
On Jan 10 The Saskatchewan [Canada] Court of Appeal has ruled that a proposed law allowing marriage commissioners to refuse to wed same sex couples on religious grounds is unconstitutional. The court says the proposal would violate the equality rights of gay and lesbian individuals and would not be a reasonable and justifiable breach of those rights. The court believes the obligation to perform same sex marriages does not affect or interfere with the freedom to hold religious beliefs and the freedom to worship. The court also cited the fundamental principle that government services must be provided to all members of the public on an impartial and non-discriminatory basis. [gw jan 10 2011]

they just can't deal with it can they,,,,, skirt around that issue of free speach,,,,, incite to violence,,,,, gotta protect that or the U.S. just wouldn't be who they are,,,,,

well okay then,,, but give us 300ft,,,,, anybody with a brain can figure out that , that in itself is an infringement on free speach,,,,, guess over time ya just got to work on extending that space till you get to the point where the people spewing hate, can't be seen or heard,,,,, and then maybe,,, when you get brave enough ,,,, you can go to the next level and tell the religious nut cakes to keep it inside behind closed doors in their churches,,,, but not in the public square,,, or politics,,,,,,,

very scary to think you're dealing with nutcakes like Rep Shimkus,,,,

recalling the posts of Westboro Baptist from throughout the past year, it gives me some level of comfort that his behavior has garnered some legal restraint,,,, and it is impressive that it was unanimous,,,,, but holy cow they just couldn't bring themselves to banning protests at funerals period,,,,

wonder if they'll have any action on the gun thingy,,, banning the sale of multi round magazines used only for mowing down goups of people,,,,

such an uphill battle when religious rights trump human rights…… we gotta turn that around, for the safety of the world…. even if ya just talk about global warming,,, and the human right to fresh air and water,,, and the human right to health care,,,, which are all so doable in a country like the U.S.

  • 51. Lesbians Love Boies  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:33 am

If anything gives an 'inch' of help for the funerals of the innocent life lost – I will take it – if only for a moment until someone comes along and challenges it. The 300ft isn't much – but it's something. A 9-year-old child's parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. can have a little more peace while they cry, remember and mourn on Thursday. WBC ilk can stick it in places I cannot say.

  • 52. Bob  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:40 am

grod, that was mentioned on an earlier thread,,, and I think the importance of mentioning it is just to give everyone hope of how it could be,,,, what we are aiming for,,,, to hear all governments make those kind of decisions,,,, it brings hope of what can be,,,, a goal to strive for…..

the other note, is that in Canada we have ONE (1) organization at the national level, dealing with the issues of LGBT people, and steering those into human rights arguments,,,,, all local level organizations eventually work their individual issues towards the national level and the experience and involvement of Egale, I think their website is http://www.EgaleCanada they presently are working with bill C=389, which deals with trans issues…..

again just saying this to generate thoughts and ideas, we are not alone in the fight,,, has there been any communication between organizations in the U.S. and Canada,,, can we learn from each other ,,,,

  • 53. Bob  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:45 am

I hear ya LLB 300ft isn't much-but it's something,,,, and the huge thing is that Phelps spewing of hatred garnered him some restraint…..

  • 54. MichGuy  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:57 am

I think in the U.S. we should consider consolidating all the gay rights groups into one huge massive national group. That way we can be more in union on our goals and we should require all gays people to donate yearly as a unwritten rule

  • 55. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 11, 2011 at 10:12 am

Yes, and make it so that the contributions can be in whatever form each person can afford. For me, right now the thing I can afford the best is my time to organize events or to meet people. So glad that you did not specify that all donations had to be monetary.

  • 56. Matthew  |  January 11, 2011 at 10:16 am

    Oops math hard.
I think I meant to say 36% is the amount of CAs registered voters.

But you get the idea. One Noms radical activist is another noms 'will of the people'

  • 57. Lesbians Love Boies  |  January 11, 2011 at 10:20 am

I agree with you (to a point, point made later) MichGuy –

I will probably get slammed on this, but in MHO some people have made activism their careers – and there are too many that like to be chiefs.

But (IMHO point), there are so many problems with our system that one group really cannot tackle them all. Although I do believe that groups are created, and new groups are created by those, and the ladder builds and we end up in small groups. It would be nice to see have a focal area where we could all gather.

    Pathetic rant over.

I also feel that at times there is animosity towards other groups (I often hear complaining about HRC) – is that also a factor in the lack of cooperation?

Hey, CC, you must have known my mother. I finally figured out that she had such little self-esteem that she had to find a way to belittle others so she could feel better about herself.

What's the abhorrent doctrine at the core of Christianity? Original sin.

People who take that seriously think that they are created broken, sick and worthless. And that they can only become well in death after they followed a bunch of arbitrary rules. And a lot of commandments that are basically about looking down on other people.

Such a worldview HAS to fuck everyone up to some degree and naturally leads to low self-esteem in some people when other factors come into play.

  • 79. Michael  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Get going before the radical anti-gay pressure group NOM starts framing the debate in terms of A) Marriage equality harming children such as being "taught" in school and B) Marriage equality forcing priests and ministers to marry gay couples or be fired, sued or thrown in prison. This is NOM's MO, the one that worked in California and Maine. Start speaking out against it now, not after they frame the debate that way, or it will be too late for our side. NOM's own research shows these arguments work and…sadly they do.

  • 80. Papa Foma  |  January 11, 2011 at 9:38 pm

Hi — I'm butting in to introduce the Raleigh clan. I'm Thom Koch (Papa Foma), a retired teacher. Felyx is my unofficially adopted son – he's in Russia with his fiance, Kevyn, for two more months. Our house in Raleigh provides HOME for Uncle Bob (Koch), and Elaine R., two cats, a dog, and a Betta fish. I was married to a Lesbian for 41 years (she died 7 years ago). She and I never discussed our homosexuality – we had a great marriage in all respects other than the bedroom. We have two biological sons (straight).
You are so right on about the biblical infallibility quotes — I think at least part of that is fear! People fear to expose what they have been brainwashed to believe is infallible – for fear that it really is.
Hope to meet you in person sometime — Papa Foma

Yep, good summary of many Christians I've known.

"People who take that seriously think that they are created broken, sick and worthless"

Hope you are doing ok LLB as your community has been severely traumatized. Glad Phelps kept somewhat at bay!

  • 83. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 11, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Greetings Papa Foma ! Thank you for stopping by and introducing everyone including "Betta fish" : D Your post caused me to feel warm and happy that there are beautiful/loving families such as yours in the world–the perfect antithesis to the hate spewed by some "so called Christians" in discussion. ((HUGS)) from Utah!

p.s. "Pathetic" is probably the last word I would everyassociate with our dear LLB! (how about: Resilient, Resourceful, Enthusiastic, Intellectual, Sincere, Witty, Compassionate…………….)

  • 88. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 11, 2011 at 11:30 pm

Yes, Sarah, I definitely CAN imagine what would happen if they were to get up there and read from the Quran or the Torah, or even the Bagavad Gita. I still remember the uproar when the Muslims asked to have the Quran for taking oaths rather than the Bible, because, as they so rightly pointed out, the bible is not their sacred book!

  • 89. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 11, 2011 at 11:34 pm

There is nothing pathetic about your rant. Heartfelt, but far from pathetic!

  • 90. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 11, 2011 at 11:53 pm

MMMWWWAHHH! to Kathy Kushinir!! A new LGBT hero who outlined brilliantly why and how LGBT persons benefit by getting married. Boo/Hiss to Chris Plante for spewing/twisting the usual "the most fundamental civil right is to vote(for 'fundamental' marriage) …. kudos to Buddy Cianci as moderator. Thanks for posting this Ray.

What is probably the most scary is that if this person WAS in charge, she might well set off those very bombs, but she would claim that God told her to do so, and she would never even see the irony of this (well, in the 8 minutes left to her she wouldn't. Hopefully when she was toasting her toes over a sulfer pit for eternity she would figure it out).

  • 92. Gregory in Salt Lake  |  January 12, 2011 at 12:40 am

    Good morning Richard : )

  • 93. anonygrl  |  January 12, 2011 at 1:48 am

Honestly, while I think he is an idiot for doing so, he is entitled to SAY anything he likes.

The SECOND he starts trying to LEGISLATE based on that book, he needs to be slapped down hard.

Unfortunately, I am fairly certain that HE doesn't understand or appreciate the difference.

  • 94. Bill J.  |  January 12, 2011 at 2:44 am

I believe that they already have. If not yet, it will be very soon.
Most controversial legislation in Rhode Island gets introduced early, then languishes in various committees, then gets passed (or not) in a frenzy at the end of the session.
Given that this legislation is no longer 'conyroversial' in Rhode Island (it is supported by majorities in both houses and is a top priority for the new governor), I think that schedule is likely to be accelerated.
In regards to NOM's ad spending in RI, it is indeed an affront, but having lived in RI for 20 years, I'm confident that it will have little impact. Rhode Island politics are quite 'insular' (if you'll forgive the pun), and this out of state effort will, if anything, turn people off to their message.

  • 95. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 12, 2011 at 3:06 am

Good morning, Gregory. Hope all is well for you and your hubby. Sorry it took so long to reply. We had the bill runs to make this morning.

And this is why I have a strict litmus test when voting for public officials: no creationists. I'd only respect the creationists if they gave up all the fruits of science and formed their own agrarian community out of the way somewhere.

  • 98. Straight Ally #3008  |  January 12, 2011 at 6:11 am

They've already written their fundraising letters to send out after they lose this battle, too (at least, given the support from Gov. Chafee and others, I hope the writing is on the wall).

You're welcome, Gregory…I love this song, not only because of its message, but also because it is laid back & chill….the version ft. Joss Stone is awesome…this song gets 5 stars in my iTunes….<3…Ronnie

Looks like some good news coming out of New Hampshire http://www.necn.com/01/12/11/APNewsBreak-Gay-marr…

Apparently the GOP won't be working to repeal equality (at least for now) and with iowas senate majority leaders pledge not to let repeal come to the floor it would seem repeal is off the table for now!!

  • 103. Steve  |  January 12, 2011 at 7:45 am

Venus is far, far more inhospitable. Mercury's gravity is too low to hold an atmosphere. Venus's atmosphere is extremely dense and toxic.

  • 104. Joel  |  January 12, 2011 at 8:05 am

What's going on? There was a new topic posted late this morning, and now it's gone! Are we being hacked?

Would some be so kind as to post a link to the Gallagher/St. Peter animation? I really want to show it to Mark. Thanks.

Yeah. Not sure what happened. You can access that topic on the right though under "RECENT COMMENTS" click on "The Evil Modern Day…"

  • 106. Richard A. Jernigan  |  January 12, 2011 at 8:52 am

Happy anniversary, P8TT family! IN some ways it doesn't seem like it has been a year, and yet, there has been so much that has happened, that sometimes it is hard to believe that only a year has passed.

  • 107. Joel  |  January 12, 2011 at 8:53 am

Thanks. It sowed up again, then disappeared again. Very weird.

So, I just executed a hundred thousand dollar action in support of marriage equality. Well, not really, but who is to know? Nom always cost drops in the press releases and making a mistatement in a press release isn't a crime as far as I know. Could these just be infations to satisfy their doners. Who is taking this money? Local Stations, Advertising Agencies, Models and Talking Heads with no sense of equality. Maybe there are more business from which to take business elsewhere than just Chick-D-Beheaded Boiled Feathered Chopped Sliced Breaded and Fried.

  • 110. Bennett  |  January 12, 2011 at 9:12 am

Oh, and whilst I am at it. Motherhood could be respected more by ceasing to eat veal than by promoting marriage inequality. Not a judgement of carnivors, I am still one, just acknowledging an equivalency.

  • 111. AB  |  January 12, 2011 at 6:43 pm

    Hey!
GREAT NEWS!! The AP is reporting that the New Hampshire GOP won’t pursue a repeal of marriage equality in 2011! http://www.concordmonitor.com/article/234007/gop-…
(I posted the same on the post about Maggie Gallagher for good measure)

  • 112. Sagesse  |  January 12, 2011 at 9:39 pm

And the longer they delay, the more marriages and families there will be, and the more politically difficult it will be to overturn. If anyone in NH is thinking of getting married, do it now :) .

  • 113. Obama Losing on Purpose? &hellip  |  January 17, 2011 at 11:40 am

[...] That was the only major marriage equality news last week in California, but there was plenty of activity elsewhere in the country. In New Hampshire, House Republican Leader DJ Bettencourt announced that repealing the state’s equal marriage law was not a top priority (though it may very well still come up); in Iowa, Fred Karger was barred from a Presidential debate; and in Rhode Island, NOM released a misleading anti-gay ad.
