Of course, this does not mean that we can afford to let up on the Senate. We have to keep on the phones and make sure that our senators know that they are to put our military ahead of their vacations, and that means that they need to remain at work until DADT is repealed.

Seems a bit of a stretch. The report says the ballot for the judges was by itself, but on the back of the same piece of paper containing the ballot for candidates and issues.
This will come down to how the courts interpret what constitutes a "separate ballot." Does it have to be on a separate piece of paper, or is having it on the back of another ballot sufficiently separate? I think this is a long shot.

Diaz-Balart of Florida is arguing against the bill on the grounds that the Democrats have not allowed debate on other things. I can't see that he had anything at all to say about DADT. He just complained that Republicans were not allowed to debate other things. Wierd.
The Democrats are speaking about DADT and what is wrong with it.
I am guessing that the Republicans realize that they are going to lose, and so Diaz-Balart used his time to just make a political speach?

Apparently the head of the Marines thinks that knowing their collegues are gay is going to cause straight Marines to either chew their own arms off, or maybe start shooting each other… I can't see what else he might mean by there being a danger of death or dismemberment if DADT is repealed.

I called my congress critter – John Campbell of CA – and asked if he would be voting to abolish DADT this afternoon. The lady said he won't know how he is going to vote until the vote happens (!). He doesn't know?
I told her I urged him to vote yes and uphold the Constitution to treat all citizens equally.

My Rep is David Drier. I called his office, urging a yes vote. The staff member took my personal info, including my street address (presumably to confirm I'm in his district) and said she would pass along my message. She said she is unaware of the Congressman's position on the matter. Riiiight.
I was tempted to also pass along a message urging him to come out, but decided to keep in classy.

I say we check with Uganda… see if they've got anyone they want to trade for McCain. I think just about anybody that Uganda wants to get rid of would be a step up for you.
Perhaps we can even get some sort of a group deal. McCain and Hatch for two as yet to be named Ugandan gay rights supporters. We will even throw in a bonus, they can have Maggie and an option on Brian, but only if they agree to take Louis as part of the deal. We will pay shipping and handling. … or at least some procedural bill allowing them to take up the DADT bill has to pass. I think this particular one sets one hour for debate on the DADT bill and signifies no amendments to the bill. But I' not sure on the particulars, maybe someone can clarify.

Because the House is so large, they have to set rules on debate before they can take up legislation (this is not a problem in the Senate), that define how long, who leads, who gets to speak, and in what order, etc.

Ah, another John Campbell constituent. Been in his district since he first took office (and many years previously). I can tell you with absolute certainty that John Campbell will do one of two things with regard to DADT: 1) He will vote against repeal, or 2) He will simply not vote.
Campbell is an absolute LGBTphobe. He has voted against ENDA and also the Matthew Shepard/James Byrd Hate Crimes bill. I have been in his office, with a group of fellow LGBT people–two of us veterans–to supposedly have a meeting about this issue. The first time we arrived for our scheduled appointment, Campbell decided to run away and could not be found. And remember that this was a Scheduled and Verified appointment! The appointment was rescheduled, and our group returned. This time, instead of the promised meeting with Campbell, we did get our meeting, but with a junior staff person.
The meeting initially went very well, and we had high hopes that maybe we had accomplished something. However, as we soon learned, we were all just given the brush-off and anything discussed and promised in his office was just to get rid of us. He has never returned one message from anyone in our group, nor has his staffer. And he has never once voted in favor of even one single thing that would benefit the LGBT community.
Congressman John Campbell is an absolute lost cause as far as the LGBT community is concerned, so don't even waste your time with him. He is a typical Republican Homophobe and Transphobe–guaranteed. And even then, he rarely even shows up to vote (thus number 2 above). I believe he has the worst record of any congressman for actually being present to make a vote, regardless of the issue. Oh, and he is also a Birther.

Perhaps he is afraid of his own death or dismemberment when the Marines he is insulting by claiming that they are not professional enough to do their jobs come after him once DADT is repealed and they can invite EVERYONE in their units to bring their spouses to the "company" picnic, and they find out that we have the same domestic concerns that they have, and that General Amos is nothing more than a closet case who is jealous over not having his own partner.

With the vote? They agreed to have a one hour debate (only one hour) on the actual bill itself, and to allow no amendments to be attached to the bill.
Now they are deciding whether the US Government should spend its time congratulating sports players on winning major trophies (for which they do, it should be noted, already receive considerable congratulations). They seem to have decided that they should offer their congratulations. How nice of them.
Now they are going to vote on whether to congratulate Gerta Weisman Klein on receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom. One thinks that perhaps, there does not need to be a vote on these issues… And if the congress were to vote to SNUB Ms. Klein, who survived a forced march through Poland after capture by the Nazis during WW2, then I, for one, would never invite THEM to tea again. The Congress, I mean. I have already struck the Nazis off the invite list. Ms. Klein is welcome any time.
After that, we will hear a one hour debate, then the REAL DADT vote. I think.

Yes, that's consistent with my experience with him. My daughter married her girlfriend on the last day you could. I ordered a flag from his office to commerate them, (and also as a test for the Representative). Every time I checked the status they would call up the order and said everything was fine, it's in the mail, etc., but never received the flag. I gave up after several months as I had my answer.

I see it in terms of integrity and discrimination, myself. There will be some amount of personal freedom curtailed in an organization like the military, but DADT directly compromises the integrity of LGBT troops, and discriminates against them.

Once DADT is repealed, I will be curious to find out if there's a roughly equal percentage of GLBTs in each branch, or if there are significant differences.

Bob, Thank you for thinking of me–and all transgender service members past, present, and future. Even with the repeal of DADT actually being within reach for gays and lesbians, any of us trans people will still have to wait probably a very, very long time into the future to be included in being able to serve our country openly.
I absolutely hail the way things are going, but if this repeal finally comes to pass with no trans inclusion (which is does not), then any pressure to do so at pretty much anytime in the future will be nonexistent. I doubt I will live long enough to see that ever happen once my LGB friends have their full rights.
