NOM staggers toward the fringe

September 1, 2010

By Rob Tisinai

It’s clear that ever since Brian Brown stepped in for Magger Gallagher at the National Organization for Marriage, the group is becoming more and more of a fringe organization. Even so, they surprised me today with an entry on their blog. You know what they did?

They referenced World Net Daily.

NOMblog has an entire entry quoting 9 paragraphs of a WND editorial. That’s astounding. If you’ve never heard of WND, that’s because they’re waaaay on the extreme edge of America’s political conversation. Take a moment and scroll down their homepage to see what I mean. Not only did they publish a forged “Kenyan” birth certificate for Obama, not only did they break a “story” about secret emails between Obama and the Kenyan government, not only do they search for reasons to call Obama a Muslim, but they still haven’t given up on birtherism.

Birtherism.

And, of course, as you might expect, they hate teh gays. They long for the good ol’ days when homosexuality was illegal, and they present video commentary saying Uganda is right in its attempt to execute gays.

Oh, and they worry Obama wants to create Nazi-style concentration camps for political opponents in the US.

As far as I know, NOM has never linked to WND before. This is a huge change in tone for them. Frankly, from a strategic point of view, it doesn’t even matter what the article said. Merely citing WND is enough to call your credibility into question, even in some quarters of the Right.

Under Maggie Gallagher’s leadership NOM labored mightily to be seen as a serious organization, the kind CNN might call on for a debate about marriage equality. Now that Brian’s in charge they seem increasingly politically tone-deaf, like a drowning organization flailing in every direction for something to grab on to.

What on earth could make them so desperate?

Haven't read this story yet, but have a happy report to make:

A lesbian security guard at my office building just showed me her engagement ring! We've been chatting about Prop H8 ever since Judge Walker's ruling…which had prompted me to tell her I was going to take out a personal billboard, advertising myself as a potential spouse.

It was very nice to give her an honestly enthusiastic hug, like I would any other fiancee. I will wait till tomorrow to check with her as to planning a date….and make sure she knows the earliest there would be a decision from the 9th Circuit would be January 2011.

  • 5. AndrewPDX  |  September 1, 2010 at 6:47 am

From those birthers I know, they are really racial bigots. They can't stand that we have a non-white president. They know they can't get away with racist condemnation any more, so they're inventing something else — anything they can to validate their true racist bigotry.

Just my observation of those I have had the misfortune of meeting.

I can tell you what is making them so desperate, Rob. They are seeing the handwriting on the wall, and they are seeing that they have been weighed in the balance and found severely lacking. They are grasping at straws trying to prevent their own demise.

I'm glad to see NOM making this open shift to the crazy right fringe. We've always known that it was NEVER "just about marriage" as they claimed. It has always been about making sure glbt were marginalized and denied any rights at all. And it's so much easier to expose them for what they really are when they show their true colors.

I wonder how long Maggie Gallagher will continue to associate with them. Think maybe she'll decide she needs to break ranks in order to keep her speaking engagement money flowing in?

ROFL…NOM & WND owned in one post…I LOVE IT!!!!!…..Thanks for the Rob.

it really says a lot that NOM is reaching out to a group that promotes Fascist ideology while saying they don't & that others that don't follow their beliefs lock-in-step do….not that we didn't already know that WND's "values" are right at the closeted base of NOM's agenda, but their monochromatic colors w/a hint of red are coming out as they scrounge to save a sinking ship….I can't help but say "OHHHHHH" as I watch this failure in astonishment…lol

UPDATE: on plaintiffs in Wyoming gay marriage Federal lawsuit. Why they may not get support groups on board.

I don’t know if this is true but I crossed it on a website.

I don’t know what to think about this.

This may influence the judge who see's this case.

There seems to be a lot to consider with these plaintiffs and this may be why no gay rights groups have come public to support the plaintiff in this case.

This need to link to WND is a really good sign for Marriage Equality. For those who may not be aware, this fight has NEVER been about protecting marriage. Pure smokescreen. It has always been about protecting society from the LGBT community, Every bit of energy put into the prop 8 campaign came from people who know with 100% certainty that homosexuality is a sick perversion and an abomination in the sight of the Lord. Maggies prop 8 legal team knew it had only objective, take this 100% religious issue and find the best way to disguise it. Make it look like something else. Anything else. And that is why they got destroyed at the trial. And they know the tide has turned and they have only one base of support left to turn to, the religious fundamentalists who can't help but show their true motivation for opposing marriage equality, Inf fact, they are PROUD of it, they boast of it, rooted as it is in what they know to be Godly righteousness. If Brian is turning to them, its a sure sign of panic. Do you know who else might be feeling a little panic right now? Justice Roberts. He HAS to know that the tide has turned massively; does he really want to spend the next 40 years on the wrong side of history if it makes it to his court? He's certainly ambitious enough to care about that.

  • 25. Skemono  |  September 1, 2010 at 8:00 am

Pretty well. I mean, nobody bothers to even think of questioning the birthplace of our white presidents. But a black president? Well, he must be from Africa… somehow.

It's another example of the prejudice that only white people can be American, and that all other races must be foreign, and not really American.

  • 26. AndrewPDX  |  September 1, 2010 at 8:02 am

WND… does that stand for "Weapons of NOM Destruction"?

Seriously, relying upon WND for reliable news is like relying upon the Onion… well, except that the Onion is based in reality.

    The Article headline:
"Man Challenging Wyoming's Marriage Law a Mentally Unstable Felon"

But remember, if you're heterosexual, even being convicted of a capitol offense can not deprive you of the right to marry. Mental retardation (not the same as what we have here — but still) also can not deprive you of the right to marry, if you're heterosexual, that is.

Since we're talking about cookies so much (and the Internet kind seem to leave you hungry again 5 minutes later) here's one of my favorite holiday recipes:

    ——————————————————————-

    ICED PUMPKIN COOKIES

    1 cup unsalted butter
    1 cup sugar
    1 egg
1 cup cooked, pureed pumpkin (fresh or canned)
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 tablespoons maple syrup
    2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

    Icing:
    2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
    1/4 cup butter, softened
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    3 tablespoons whipping cream

    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add pumpkin, egg, maple syrup and vanilla, and mix well.

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir into butter mixture until well blended.

Drop by teaspoonful onto parchment covered baking sheet, about two inches apart. Flatten slightly with wet hand and bake about 15 minutes, or until golden. Cool on wire rack.

    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Icing: Cream confectioners sugar and butter. Add vanilla and cream (along with a few drops orange food coloring, if you like) and beat until smooth. If icing is too thin, add more confectioners sugar; if too thick, add more cream.

    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

You can also use a cream cheese frosting, whipping together:

    8 oz. cream cheese, softened
    1/4 cup butter, softened
    2 cups confectioners sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

I'm afraid to say I haven’t actually found the perfect frosting/glaze for these cookies yet. Keep experimenting, and try using less sugar and butter than these icing/glazes call for. Sometimes it comes out too gloppy.

    GOOD LUCK!

  • 36. Mark M. (Seattle)  |  September 1, 2010 at 8:42 am

Add 1 egg white to your frosting recipe and it will stiffen up wonderfully :-)

  • 39. Carpool Cookie  |  September 1, 2010 at 8:51 am

Thanks for the icing tip! I was just reading Martha Stewart's recipe for "white icing/glaze" after posting that, and it's 4 1/2 (!) cups confectioner's sugar whisked with 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. (You can use liquere or milk, instead.)

Why does that sound kind of disgusting?

Powdered sugar has always made me a little suspicious.

Hope you don't mind, Carpool Cookie, but I am going to make these cookies for our fall and winter holidays here. I will take pictures and post on my blog, since I will be cutting them out with my Jewish cookie cutters, and they will be in the shapes of a Hanukkah menorah, a torah, and a Star of David. I will also post a link here to flickr (if I even remember how to get into my flickr account) so that everyone can see them. Thanks for the recipe! Of course, now I have to go fix myself something to eat, because I am HUNGRY!!!!

  • 52. Carpool Cookie  |  September 1, 2010 at 10:48 am

  • 53. Carpool Cookie  |  September 1, 2010 at 10:55 am

This is a DREAM COME TRUE! My recipe is sweeping the globe!!!!

(With the first batch, experiment with the cooking time. You don't want these cookies crispy. With the sample/test ones, take them out when the bottoms of the cookies have just turned golden; don't wait for the tops to brown. See if that's cooked enough…and remember they cook a bit more after removed from the oven, so let the sample one cool before deciding if they need a little more time, or what.)

I sense much fear in them. Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. They fear differences. They are afraid that their world will be turned upside down. They are afraid someone close to them will come out and they won't know what to do when invited to the wedding. And they won't be able to cope when the wedding is the most fabulous thing they ever attend.

There's still all that money Brian Brown can collect in donations. Never underestimate the power of greed once someone splashes money in your face. At some point, Brian Brown's audience is no longer potential voters, but rich sponsors, and the appearance of imminent death and destruction of their movement is more persuasive to desperate and moneyed sponsors than success would appear — success would generate lots of small contributions from grassroots believers. The more dire Brian Brown's NOM is, the heavier the big-spender donation pleading to make him rich becomes.

Think the Koch Brothers. Monckton, Murdoch, and others. It's a challenge to overcome the rich few, even for many little voters — how powerful they are! Yet they prefer the rule of a few rich folk over the rule of law as identified by a few non-rich judges. Hmm …

As the shrill anti-gay pressure group NOM loses $$$ and influence, it's becoming more and more desperate. The other day, they went off on a rant because New Zealand refuses to give tax-exempt status to a fraudulent "ex-gay" group. Either NOM wants us to believe now that fraud is a religious belief or being pro-fraud = traditional marriage. It sure is fun to watch them flailing and becoming more and more homophobic and proving our point–that they are not pro-traditional marriage, just pro-homophobia.

I always liked this quote about fear from Dune. It kept me sane as a kid:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

And welcome to the family! Grab a cookie and enjoy the party!

    Cookies, eh?

NO-BAKE CHOCOLATE OATMEAL PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES

    INGREDIENTS:
    2 cups white sugar
    4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    1/2 cup margarine
    1/2 cup milk
    1 pinch salt
    3 cups quick cooking oats
    1/2 cup peanut butter
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    ________________________________________
    DIRECTIONS:
    1. In a saucepan bring sugar, cocoa, margarine, milk, and salt to a rapid boil for 1 minute.
    2. Add quick cooking oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well.
    3. Working quickly, drop by tablespoonfuls onto waxed paper, and let cool.

These are fun to serve at pool parties in Los Angeles. For the first couple hours none of your carb-phobic guests will touch them. Then about 4pm, after a few drinks, they suddenly disappear.

And don't even get me started on "dirty balls."

After I get back in from hurricane preparations, I will post the challah recipe I found in the Williams-Sonoma Essentials of Baking book. Be back shortly. And Rob, you might as well post the other recipe!

    Okay: DIRTY BALLS

    Ingredients
    1 package of Oreo cookies
    1 block of cream cheese
    White chocolate

    Directions:
    1. Smash up the oreos
    2. Mash them cream cheese
    3. Roll into balls
    4. Drizzle with white chocolate
    5. Refrigerate until set.

For the record, I LOVE my 3-ingredient white trash desserts. When we leave the topic of cookies, I'll have to tell you about Apple Flop.

Actually, my friends and I refer to these as "Desperation Cookies."

Thanks! Found out just a few minutes ago that we are far enough inland that we are only expecting very high winds. But that is why I had to get everything secured. All the lighter weight plants and yard furniture had to go inside. Most of it in the storage shed, and the ferns on the screened in back porch. I will keep everyone posted. If nothing else, I will send text messages to P8TT family on the West Coast to post something if our internet goes out for any period of time.

Okay, everybody. New fundraising idea. Everybody who wants to submit at least one recipe for the P8TT Family Cookbook, click on my name and post a comment on the next thread of my blog. then I will contact you via private emails and we will get the recipes together into a book. Of course, any stories you have to share will make it even better. And I already have a contact in the cookbook arena WRT fundraising. All I ask is that you give me about an hour to get the new post up.

NOM has always been on the fringe…. they've just taken awhile to show there true colors. Wearing a sheep's costume can only last so long…

    Hi Richard,

Should these recipes be posted as comments in the "Getting ready for Hurricane Earl" thread? I have a great recipe for spaghetti with clam sauce.

  • 92. Richard A. Walter (s  |  September 2, 2010 at 11:45 am

Hello, pgbach! We have missed you! Welcome back. Come over to the new thread and grab some cookies, MILK, coffee and challah!

  • 93. Richard A. Walter (s  |  September 2, 2010 at 11:53 am

Actually, just a general comment at the Hurricane Earl thread, so that I can email privately. This way, we have a better chance of the recipes not being hijacked.
