LA Times Poll Shows Majority Support for Marriage Equality

April 7, 2010

by Brian Leubitz

In yet another poll on marriage equality, an LA Times poll released yesterday showed that a majority of registered voters support marriage equality:

Registered voters surveyed in the latest poll said 52% to 40% that “same-sex couples should be allowed to become legally married in the state of California.”

That’s the latest in a string of surveys that have found similar results. A PPIC poll released March 25 found respondents backing gay marriage 50% to 45%.  And a Times/USC poll last November found a 51% to 43% split on the issue. As with the previous surveys, the latest Times/USC poll showed a sharp polarization by political party and ideology, with Democrats and liberals supporting same-sex marriage by large margins and Republicans and conservatives opposing it by equally lopsided margins. (LA Times)

Of course, this poll doesn’t mean that we could win a ballot fight. As we learned in 2008, these polls have a bias of about 3-5 points in favor of marriage equality. It seems many people don’t want to admit to a questioner that they are bigoted, but are cool with doing so once they step in to a voting booth.  Before I would feel comfortable, I’d like to see that number at closer to 58 or 59 percent for an extended period of time.  I think that would allow us a comfortable victory.

But that being said, things worth having are rarely won with comfortable victories. When we go back to the ballot in 2012, we will have to work our butts off. The Prop 8 trial very well may not be concluded by November 2012. And frankly, at some point we are going to have to win at the ballot box to show that America is well and truly changing. Until then, all we have is the general notion of change.

I was going to write something about all the change that will be, but a commenter, Nancy, did so at the LA Times quite well. Rather than making the point myself, I thought I would reproduce the comment here.  Most of the comments at these newspaper sites tend to be viscous personal attacks, homophobic slurs, and all sorts of smears. Yet, that’s not always the case. Without further introduction, here’s Nancy:

I guess I just don’t get it. I am in a happy, heterosexual relationship that is leading to marriage. I am religious – Babtist in my upbringing, in fact. Yet I simply cannot figure out how and why the marriage of a gay couple would threaten my partner and me in any way. I know of no divorces that were caused by some gay couple somewhere.

The arguments against gay marriage are arbitrary and completely irrational. It’s time to get on to far more important issues, like education, the economy and the environment. I believe the polls and seriously doubt that it’s some sort of liberal plot to convert everyone to gayness. Come on, folks, get a grip.

An ironic story – someone very close to me who is against gay marriage is in a mixed-race relationship. It wasn’t that long ago that her partner, a black man, would have been lynched for being with a white woman. The message: we who believe in equal rights shall overcome. And there’s a lot of hypocrisy in this whole issue.

Hang in there, my gay friends. We shall indeed overcome.

I always like to compare people who seriously think marriage is in danger because of gays to a kid on the playground throwing a tantrum because he doesn't want to share the swingset with the new kid.

If your relationship is so weak that it's threatened by someone else's, it was probably doomed to fail anyway.

Yesterday we reported on the offensive CNN segment where Kyra Phillips invited widely discredited "sexual reorientation expert" Richard Cohen on and asked the question, "Homosexuality — is it a problem in need of a cure?"

After much outcry from viewers, and after we contacted the network, CNN gave us a statement saying "By bringing this story to the fore, we engage various advocates from all sides. This story does not end here and CNN will continue to explore other views and positions."

Wouldn't it have just been easier to say, "Our bad. We made a mistake. Sorry about that."

That statement was satisfactory to neither us nor to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) who just issued a call to action that notes CNN had originally asked a GLAAD representative to appear on a segment this morning discussing the issue and the fact that is has absolutely no basis in scientific fact.

Unfortunately, CNN called GLAAD at 7 AM and said, "Never mind" and canceled the segment. So the network apparently has no plans to either correct the record or explain how the discredited ex-gay practitioner Richard Cohen came to be deemed an acceptable source as a "psychotherapist, educator and expert in the field of sexual reorientation," despite the fact he was expelled from the American Counseling Association back in 2002.

This is off topic, but we have talked about Constance McMillen and her prom. Unfortunately, by deceit, she she was led to a "fake" prom, while the other students went to a private prom.

I know exactly what you mean. I think I've described it here before — I reach a certain threshold with this stuff after which I can feel it doing psychic damage. I can only take so much of it.

When prop 8 came up I thought it would never pass, when in Cal I never had to take a hotel room so I thought I knew it pretty well. When the dust settled I found out in different forums, like the Mercury, sac bee, that many gay people didn't register to vote, then that the GLBT "leadership" didn't lead anything except maybe the fund raising parties, new groups came up and the courage campaign caught my attention then AFER and I remember in these forums and in various articles AFER being decried as stupid and risky, for going federal, Salmon (u know who I mean) saying 2010 was too early, to me 2010 is not too early and I loved AFERT doing what I would call going for the jugular.
I hate injustice and right now I'm pissed about those miners dead in W Virginia, they may be redneck and bigots but there's a similarity you and them are abused people by an unfair system.

With regard to Brian's comment that "As we learned in 2008, these polls have a bias of about 3-5 points in favor of marriage equality. It seems many people don’t want to admit to a questioner that they are bigoted, but are cool with doing so once they step in to a voting booth," this idea is a rehash of the so-called Bradley Effect, in which some polls showed that Bradley would win the race for governor of California in 1982, and instead Bradley lost. The loss was attributed to racism that people were supposedly trying to cover up.

See http://articles.latimes.com/2008/nov/04/opinion/e… and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect , with the latter pointing out that "Sal Russo, a consultant for Deukmejian in the race has said that another private pollster working for the campaign, Lawrence Research, also accurately captured the late surge in favor of Deukmejian, polling as late as the night before the election. According to Russo, that firm's prediction after its final poll was an extremely narrow victory for Deukmejian. He asserts that the failure of pre-election polls such as The Field Poll arose, largely because they stopped polling too soon, and that the failure of the exit polls was due to their inability to account for absentee ballots."

Similar effects could have led to misleading polls regarding Proposition Eight, and don't discount the effect of advertising changing public opinion by a few percentage points just before the election and too late to be easily captured by the polls (campaigns pay for polls to get useful data for planning purposes and once the election is only a few days off, polling doesn't buy you anything – by the time you get the results it would be too late to do anything different).

Sorry for the few mistakes especially the "s" for rednecks and they are good people except that they didn't get access to the same kind of schooling you guys think is standard. I was taught in grade school to work with my hands, not think and since I couldn't shut up at 13 I was in reform school. I was brought up in an area in Brussels what you would call a white trash area, our crime was to be poor.

OK..now I am pissed. I belong to a group called "logo uberfans". It is kinda like a test group for logo to survey certain people so they can make the gay channels LOGO and HERE more gay friendly, and to add new programs.
The e-mail I got from the today said that Logo has decided that to make their channel better they have started filming a new reality show called:
    The A-List – NYC
It is a whole reality series revolving around the rich and elite gay segment of our community.
UMMM…My scathing comments will probably not be posted , but rest assured I informed them that in these horrific times of inequality, the last thing we need is an entire series touting the lavish lifestyles of such worthless gays as Joe Solmonese of the HRC.

while the rest of us are on the lines fighting…we will be subjected to watching clips of things like Joe getting fashion awards and shopping in beverly Hills.
and rest assured also that this series will revolve around suit wearing "straight acting" gay married people or mega rich idiots, that do NOT reflect the majority of the gay community. This will be a bunch of self hating gays that "don't believe" gay marriage is necessary, but having a Nieman Marcus card is.
PLEASE write to LOGO and if you agree with me, let them know..THIS IS NOT what the gay community needs or wants to watch.
we need shows with REAL normal people…not a bunch of self loathing rich gay twats who feel they are above the rest of us.
This decision is making me physically ill.

Cyndi Lauper To Give Homeless GLBT Youth A Home
Written by Jeff Katz | Wednesday, 07 April 2010

By far one of the best allies our community has ever had, the fantastical Cyndi Lauper has proven her commitment to the gay community yet again, announcing that she is building a shelter for GLBT youth in New York.

(me) It so telling when complete strangers are more caring, loving…you know human….then your own family….yeah?……

"Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they're still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets. We need to make sure we're taking care of them," Cyn said.

(me) As much as the Hateros want to deny that this is the truth…there it is…..

The appropriately named True Color Residences, made up of 30 studio-style apartments, are slated to open in Harlem in time for winter 2011. Recognizing that many existing shelters only provide housing and assistance to youth up until the age of 18, the True Color Residences will focus on assisting GLBT youth between 18-24.

(me) True Color Residences…..I love it…..<3…Ronnie

I expected such an asenine response from you, since you are very quick to rant and rave without thinking about the repercusssions for the future of such a show airing. but I digress,,
you are welcome to your opinion as am I.

  • 19. dieter  |  April 7, 2010 at 9:46 am

    and some good news:

An antigay California statute requiring health experts to find a cure for homosexuality is on its way to being reversed by the state legislature. The assembly's public safety committee has approved Assembly Bill 2199, introduced by Bonnie Lowenthal (pictured) of Long Beach, which seeks to repeal the decades-old law

  • 20. JeffSD  |  April 7, 2010 at 9:55 am

Also its important to remember that people lie to people on polls – meaning if the poll is automated (most are these days) the person answering the question is not talking to a real person but a recorded voice – meaning the polling cuts out the people that lie because they are talking to a person.

wayyyyyyyyyyy OT Fiona, I requested "In the eye of the beholder" from my favourite bookstore, they are trying to find it for me, I told them it was published in U.K> she wondered " If the title had been changed, cause they do that a lot to dumb the books down" don't ya love it.

p.s. I know I can find it from your web, but I love the store to hunt, and they love it as much as I , maybe I'll order two and let them keep one, just see if it gets carted off.

Brian, as for today's post, encouraging, re: Nancy, is there someway to get in touch with her, this is the segment of the religious right, we want to be engaging with for starters, I tell you inside every Church, there's someone like her, working on the inside.

  • 24. dieter  |  April 7, 2010 at 10:41 am

    Ronnie,
You will note that after you spent the better part of the day ranting about how the recent internet decision, would be the end of the world, or the start of a world wide revolution, that I did not respond to your rant, as you did to mine. I could just as easily have said to you
that if you were unhappy with the internet decision, then simply don't use the internet.
But I didn't. and there is a reason. I understand you are entitled to your rants.I also understand the far reaching implications of such a decision. So I said nothing to you. You will also note that in MY post I made it clear that I wanted people to write LOGO ….ONLY if they agreed with me. Your response to me was unnecessary and not very well thought out.
My anger at this programming decision is not ended by simply not watching the show. Do you understand that a show like this will cause harm to the younger generation of gays who watch it, and are TOLD by these gay rich elitists that gay marriage is NOT important.
Gay rights are NOT important. You are irrelevant unless you are rich and famous.
That is the message that LOGO will be sending. With so many young gays already feeling the pressure of low self worth, and non acceptance, I find it hard to believe that someone who loves to rant about the apocolypse occuring everytime someone makes a decision that you disagree with, would simply say "don't watch it." please tell that to the next gay kid who commits suicide because he learned from LOGO that his life meant nothing because he could not afford to buy Gucci. Tell that to the voters who will be swayed into voting against us after learning that "even the gay people on this show don't think gay marriage and gay rights are important."
But That is all I will say on this issue, as I am sure you need the time to rant on about the end of the world because someone got tricked into going to the wrong prom.
Have a nice day. I am actually trying to HELP the gay cause. I choose not to be the type of person who says…"don't watch it."

  • 25. dieter  |  April 7, 2010 at 10:45 am

    In the news:
The governor of Virginia..(the very same one who undid a bill offering gay protections, and insisted that schools remove their anti gay bullying policies)
    has officially declared April,
    "Confederate History Month"
completely ignoring the Union side of history, and
he made a statement that this was to teach the children the important contributions that the WHITE folks have made.
wow…so now he made it clear..he hates gays…hates blacks….and has completely joined Texas in trying to rewrite all of history.

It sure is a shame that this site does not have a MUTE button or IGNORE button, so one would not have to be subjected to suffering through self righteous posts and rants by a raving lunatic queen who has no other purpose for being on this site than drawing attention to himself. since clearly a certain poster has ZERO regard for harm that will come to our communities youth, and would rather just blather on and on about how much he is for gay rights while at the same time completely dismissing the fact that because I am much smarter than HE is he refuses to realize that what I said about LOGO was in fact correct. But go ahead and keep posting your curse filled rants, and ignoring reality. At least now I know to simply ignore any post Ronnie puts up.
I have no time for Drama Queens.
One can Only hope Ronnie has no contact with other gay youth, as it is clear he could care less if they live or die…as long as he can keep coming in here to rant and curse in every post so that he can get people to respond to him. UGGH. sad sad life.

  • 33. Sassytas  |  April 7, 2010 at 11:27 am

Okay Dieter, that video was FANTASTIC. We need to remember what that is all about and realize just how scared the heteros are if they think we can ruin their marriages, children, happiness. There is enough love in the world for everyone and that is what Christ stood for – love everyone as you want to be loved. Very simple – not political or religious.

It sure is a shame that this site allows people to disagree with people who are apart of the same community and be subjected to suffer through dieters self righteous I hate rich gays and young gays and blah blah blah blah, who has no other purpose for being on this site then drawing attention to himself…by insulting somebody just for saying then don't watch it…..since clearly a certain poster has ZERO regard for the fact they most peoplr my age know that reality TV is not actually reality…just very entertaining and would rather blather on and on about how much he is for gay rights at the same time blah blah blah blah

.pointing out by rants and cursing when you just wrote whole paragraphs to insult me after all I said was then don't watch it…..not to mention you curse and call people names all the time just for not agreeing with you on one thing…..but guess that all LGBTQQIA people have to be just like the all power Bitter Drama Queen dieter….I'm sorry but I didn't realize reality only includes what dieter wants reality to be….my bad. At least now I know to simply ignore any post dieter posts…oh wait I already do that.

Ronnie…the YOUTH that I spoke of are NOT your age. I refer to exactly what I said. YOUTH. YOU are not part of YOUTH unless you count maturity level.
    Question for you..
Constance McMillen was upset because her school wanted to hold a straights only prom…
would you have responded to her the same way you responded to me?..
would you have told her…If you don't like the idea of a straights only prom..then DONT GO?

    I am thinking not.
and as to your latest post. You could not even come up with your own thought process, and all you were capable of doing is using my own words.

Personally I think that some people SHOULD think of suicide as an option…
    so think about it.
you little drama queen. do the world a favor.
all future responses will be ignored due to lack of substance so don't bother. Perhaps your time would be better suited trying to get a job.

The Marriage Ref Goes (Really) Gay
Written by Instinct Staff | Wednesday, 07 April 2010

If you thought the Madonna episode of Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref was about as gay as the show would get, you were wrong. This week's episode will not only include a gay couple in a fight over a life-sized Betty Boop figurine, but Kathy Griffin and Nathan Lane as guests on the "judging" panel! You can jump on your unicorn and head over the glitter rainbow to watch the episode this Thursday at 9 on NBC.

(me) Oh no…photo opt…..KG and NL?….have the tissues ready for all tears of laughter….is this going to ruin gay youth?….They are fighting over a life-sized Betty Boop….soooo… maybe…..bwaaaa…..<3….Ronnie

And actually, fern, the biggest bigot in the mining disaster in Montcoal, West Virginia, is Don Blankenship, the CEO of Massey Energy for putting his profit margin way above the safety of the miners. He has even gone so far as to spend millions out of his own personal fortune to make sure the judge he wanted was appointed to the WV Supreme Court because he had a case coming before them regarding one of Massey's fines. This company has been cited over six hundred times since January of 2009 alone and 50 of the violations, including repeated violations for the same lack of ventilation that led to Monday's explosion, have come in March of 2010. And he has made sure that no Massey Energy mines are union shops. And this particular mine is their biggest cash cow, because the type of coal it produces is used in the steel industry, up to and including the high-carbon steel that is used to manufacture medical instruments. So the less he spends on safety, the more of the money goes into the profit margin of Massey Energy. This man is so proud of how he has screwed the miners that he keeps a TV in his office that has a bullet hole it got during an attempt to unionize.

Me too this morning, I thought I was somehow screwing it up, but it took three tries to get subscribed.

Btw, Richard, for clarification, the Comcast v. FCC decision wasn't a Supreme Court ruling. It was handed down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, equivalent to the 9th Circuit here on the West Coast. However, unlike the limited effect a 9th Circuit ruling might have (i.e., limited to just the states in its jurisdiction), this ruling is binding for the FCC, which in turn affects the entire country.

In theory, the FCC could appeal this to the USSC, but pundits are all saying it's unlikely they'll appeal. I'm guessing the FCC thinks it would lose and intends to work around this another way. From what I've been reading and hearing reported, it seems the most straightforward way would be to reinstate regulatory authority that it abandoned in 2002.

I think this is a very important issue to keep an eye on. Like the Citizens United case, it has the potential to impact the very nature of our democracy.

Thank you for that clarification, Kathleen. You would probably be amazed at the amount of legal education you and the few others I have had contact with recently have given me. What a supreme mitzvah you have done here. Again, thank you.

First I would like to say that I am beginning this post with a thought I came up with….that I had a though that I should tell you that I have a thought and commentary about what is in this article about Zimbabwe….because commentary strategically placed within a broken down article are original thoughts…ummm because I originally thought them and then originally typed them and then originally clicked SUBMIT!!!!…..end of original thought I came up with…originally…..now onto article with more original thoughts and commentary that I came up with……originally….

Forced "Corrective" Rapes Revealed in Zimbabwe
Written by Jonathan Higbee | Wednesday, 07 April 2010

"A troubling report was released today by the U.S. State Department detailing instances of “corrective” rape and other horrific treatment of gays and lesbians in Zimbabwe."

(my original thought #1) correct and rape in the same sentence….WOW!!!….I wonder if that's how my cousin felt when she was raped…that it was correct…yeah?

"The findings reveal that lesbians face rape, often at the hands of family members, as a method to “cure” homosexuality, while gay men in the country are forced to have heterosexual sex."

(my original thought #2) Ok so I understand the ability to rape a lesbian(so wrong) without drugging them…the hands of family part?….with family like that…well you know….but the gay men thing….how do you force them to have heterosexual sex?….I'm guessing they hold a gun to his head….not a far stretch?…..<3…Ronnie

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) – The 2010 race for Iowa governor kicked off with the 1st debate of the season. Today, all three Republican candidates gathered in the Sioux City studios to sell their vision of the future to Iowans.

All of the candidates, former Governor Terry Branstad, Representative Rod Roberts, and businessman Bob Vander Plaats consider themselves socially and fiscally conservative, but there are some subtle political differences that our debate showed.

While all three are firm supporters of the idea that marriage should be between a man and a woman… how they would go about restoring the state's ban on gay marriage is one place where the candidates differ.

Former Governor Terry Branstad and Representative Rod Roberts say the decision should be left up to voters, but Bob Vander Plaats doesn't want to wait four years for a constitutional amendment to come on the ballot. He says he'll sign an executive order the first day he's in office, halting further same-sex marriages until Iowans can vote on the issue.

    Caution;
never buy anything from mega superstar designer Ronnie…LOL
It appears his sequin and rhinestone drag gowns, cannot be of very high quality since even though he claims to be a rockstar designer with tons of money and backers, it would be hard to make anything of quality when one spend 18 hours a day watching Glee, Ugly betty, and cruising youtube for videos. since by looking at the times of his posts, one can tell that he spends a span of about 15 hours a day in here, and that does not even include all the other sites he visits..LOL

whatever will the fashion world do?…seems poor little drama queen Ronnie's ideas have all dried up like his tiny little mind,.

No real backers would support a whiny little immature drag gown maker who spends every waking moment trying to be clever (and failing miserably)
but like I said. we all know that backers = Mom and dad..LOL

    poor poor pathetic little thing.

its a shame that some parents didn't choose to use their option for abortion.

    @fern
In response to your statement "to me 2010 is not too early"
Equality Maine's post vote analysis quotes to illustrate the risk of advancing a cause before all your ducks are lined up:

" Heading into October we had identified 100,000 supportive voters. Throughout October we had hundreds of Volunteer Vacationers from around the country, people who paid their way to come to Maine to work on this historic campaign, because they were deeply committed to winning marriage equality for all LGBT couples. They canvassed, phonebanked, did data entry, recruited volunteers and spoke to voters about the importance of marriage equality.

On Election Day we began with a GOTV (got-out-the-vote) universe of 270,000 voters, in an election we estimated would take 275,000 votes to win. Turnout was much greater than anyone predicted and in fact, it was a 40-year high of nearly 60% in an off-year election. While we originally thought high turnout would benefit us, in the end it didn't.

We turned out nearly 100% of our GOTV universe — 268,000 of 270,000 voters. It was not enough to balance the aggressive lobbying of the Roman Catholic Diocese, who heavily pressured their parishioners to vote Yes on 1. Had we turned out the full 275,000 voters, we still would have fallen short. The results of the election were:
    YES = 299,808 = 52.8%, NO = 267,785 = 47.2%

The work done in 2009, and before, allowed us to identify 267,784 supporters, laying the groundwork for a future marriage equality campaign. We will continue to educate and identify supporters with the help of our volunteer leaders and their teams in towns, places of worship, and campuses statewide, who are poised to continue the critical work of having conversations about marriage equality with people in their communities. We now know that we will need an estimated 325,000 marriage equality supporters. Thus, we need to identify an additional 60,000 supportive Mainers to win marriage in the future. In order for us to do that, we all need continue talking about the importance of marriage equality. Identifying 60,000 voters will not be easy. We need to reach out to people in every city, town, and unorganized territory, in grocery stores, churches and town halls. It is through personal one-one-one conversations that we will change the hearts and minds of those who were unsure about marriage in 2009."

The lessons of Maine 2009 may prove useful next time around, and for others contemplating ballot initiaitves. Another lesson for those contemplating doing so is that polls overstate support, as Bill [above] in quoting Brian, suggests in the size of 3-5% points in favor of marriage equality.

How many more votes would be needs in California to win the day. From where would they come?

    Caution:
Never take advice from mega PSL dieter….LOL
It appears his advice to other people is to kill themselves after all they said was then don't watch it. Most definitely not the high quality advice of a sane caring person since even though he claims to care about gay rights it appears he only cares about the gay rights of people who always agree with him, never talk back, and are only the type of gay person he is (i.e. bitter and jaded). It would be hard to point out how somebody spends all his time on the internet….looking at the times of dieters post he is guilty of the same thing he is accusing me of….minus the videos and what not…..because…..

    he can't copy and paste…..bwaaaaaaaaaaa…….

and that does not even include all the other sites he visits since he posts all those articles from other sites without a url or a link….because he can't copy and paste….bwwwwwwwwaaaaaa…..

Whatever will the gay community do?,,,,seems tired dumb bitter queen dieter's ideas have dried up like is shriveled…..dododododo…..

No real humans or a gay advocate would suggest that somebody kill themselves….let alone somebody who was gay…..a in-humane bitter queen like dieter who spends every waking moment trying to be holier then thou while putting other people down just because they said….then don't watch it….FOOL!!!!

but like i said BTOQs who are also PSLs with alzDs are amusing….

its a shame that some parent actually gave birth to a lard that promotes suicide

and the poor old lard is under the impression that I give flying fuck how old he is…..lol

Gotta love a silly BTOQ and PSL with alzDs…..no matter how obnoxious and rude they are/

Now I will let you all suffer through his response since first he says he was not going to read my comments and ignore them…and yet tada…he didn't…..so them he will simply come back with some long dramatic meaningless rant after pointing out how much of a dram queen I am and all the rants I post…..but I guess he's allowed to because this is the world according to dieter.

and telling somebody gay to commit suicide no more makes you an advocate for gay rights and gay youth, than ex-gays and Hateros doing the same….not really anything to laugh at…just sad…for you..
    DONE!!!

and lol @ and idiot who thinks a gay kid is going to kill himself because he can't afford a Gucci bag………OLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOLOLO….ummmm NO!!!!

  • 65. Bill  |  April 7, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Just to clarify G Rod's comment that "Another lesson for those contemplating doing so is that polls overstate support, as Bill [above] in quoting Brian, suggests in the size of 3-5% points in favor of marriage equality."

I wasn't suggesting a 3-5% systematic error in the polls prior to the election but rather that you had a fluid situation (opinions changing with time) and that exit polls have biases due to not counting absentee ballots and first-time voters being less likely to participate in an exit poll – both suggesting that the evidence for the "Bradley Effect" hypothesis is actually pretty weak.

About a month before Proposition Eight was voted on, I went to a fundraiser, and they told us that their focus group studies showed that, while voters were (at that point) tending to vote against Proposition Eight, the opposition was rather weak and that they could be easily influenced by the sort of ads the "Yes on Eight" camp was likely to run. The most likely explanation is not that the voters lied but that some changed their opinions due to the influence of the advertising in favor of Proposition EIght – there was not an adequate response from the "No on Eight" side, at least partly exacerbated by an early October funding issue.

BTW, most of the polls have a margin of error of 3 percent or so, so a 3 to 5 percent error one way or the other is hardly surprising. To half the error, you have to quadruple the sample size (assuming samples much smaller than the population), so most campaigns figure 4 polls accurate to 3 percent is more useful than one poll accurate to 1.5 percent.

Withers: NYC cop accused of using anti-gay slur
By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 04.07.2010 9:28am EDT

For the past two months New York City police have been trying to close down Chi Chiz, a bar and restaurant on Christopher Street. Between July 2009 and January 2010 police officers allegedly have seen four sales of uncontrolled substances in the bar—it caters to black and brown gay men. The club’s owners have charged the police have been over zealous in their administration of the law.

The place was raided on March 5 by a dozen police officers. They shut it down, but the owners went to a judge and they reopened the next night. As the place was minding its business by doing business, some white guy was in front yelling this: “This fag establishment should be closed.” When he was confronted by two activists, Allen Roskoff and Corey Johnson, he called them faggots. 911 was called, the police arrived, and they know him. Why? Because he’s a brother in blue. An undercover cop.

A lawyer for Chi Chiz says a police department representative confirmed the officer is undercover, and has been reassigned to a desk. His identity? No one is talking.

Looking forward to how some of our readers respond. Most will be bothered, but a few will defend the police. As they lovingly did in the case of Henry L. Gates. Probably will argue the club forced the over worked cop to use the word.

  • 67. Ronnie  |  April 7, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Oh…who am I kidding….. I can't post anything without saying something about it

Ok sure…close it down for dealing drugs….whatever….not a problem…well a prob for the drug dealer….lol…..however this incident was not about dealing drugs…..of course he's an undercover cop….using our tax dollars to spout out anti-gay slurs…..and the cops supported what he said because hes a cop…..no surprise at all…..and of course no one is talking…and saying his identity…also not a surprise at all…hmmmmm.

    woohoo good news:
This church is right next door to me..literally I can throw a rock from my back yard and break a window if I wanted to…and back in 2008 they slammed my quiet rural neighborhood with thousands of anti gay yes on 8 signs.
and I could not be happier to read the news that just came in:

It seems like a house of worship should be immune to the economy, but an Orangevale congregation of about 400 is joining millions of homeowners nationwide in looking for a new home.

The Family Christian Center's home on Hazel Avenue has been put into foreclosure by the bank after the organization struggled to keep up with the ballooning mortgage that now has a $20,000 monthly payment — a difficult commitment even in better times.

A loan modification program would have left them with a $45,000 monthly payment.

"Churches are supported by giving and by tithing," said executive pastor Matthew Oliver. "If people don't have jobs, they have nothing to tithe off of."

Tithing is the biblical tradition of giving ten percent of your income to the church. Oliver said the lack of funds means the congregation will have to leave the location the church has held for decades.

Rather than despairing over the ordeal, Oliver and church members are greeting the change with enthusiasm.

"It's exciting. It's kind of exciting to go to a new place," said church member Dayna Tomasegovic.

The Family Christian Center is bringing all of their ministry tools with them, including their nightclub for young people and their advanced bible study program.

    and I say BUH-BYE…BUH-BYE now….
this means that the property of about 10 acres that is next to me will now be vacant and I can finally enjoy all 5 acres of my backyard now without listening to the holy rollers….woohooo!!!

    ooohh…gonna go naked tanning now..LOL
this means my next closest neighbor will now be approximately 3/4 miles away from me….

"gay" is now a political party in the phillipines. Why aren't we doing that HERE?

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Supreme Court overturned a decision Thursday barring a gay rights group from contesting national elections in May and recognized it as a legitimate political party for the first time.

In a unanimous ruling, the 15-member court threw out decisions by the Elections Commission denying accreditation to Ang Ladlad (Out of the Closet) on grounds that it tolerates immorality and offends both Christians and Muslims.

The justices said the party had complied with all legal requirements, and that there is no law against homosexuality.

"I felt vindicated," said the group's leader, Danton Remoto, an English professor at the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University. He said that Ang Ladlad had struggled for recognition and accreditation for the past seven years.

    [youtube

    81. Straight Dave  |  April 7, 2010 at 10:30 pm

That made my day, Kathleen! I don't remember this specific song, but I do remember those times very clearly. And I do remember living in MS in 1970. Watching the present-day Fulton community brings it all right back. Nothing changes because they continue to teach their children the very same negative "ideals". There is no growth, no openness, no room for new ideas. So very un-American. Please find yourself another country, indeed.

We need a new breed of folk singers to call out the modern version of hate. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Yeah, they did that with the first Harry Potter book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (as it's known in the rest of the world).

It's a little insulting to think that publishers in the US think so little of their reader's intelligence.

  • 86. Brian Leubitz  |  April 8, 2010 at 12:05 am

No, that is not accurate. The groups that are gathering signatures to get it on the ballot in 2010 are actually quite a ways away from having the required number of signatures.

  • 87. Brett  |  April 8, 2010 at 12:16 am

Were the question to reach the ballot this year and somehow overturn Prop 8, wouldn't the court case against it then be discarded? It seems to me that it might benefit the country as a whole more to let the court case play out before overturning the measure in the voting booth.

To G. Rod, Bill & Walter (soon to be)
thank you for your time answering, I followed Maine closely and didn't look at the figures I was too hateful, had I met a Mainer in Brussels that day who would have mentioned something against the gay I would have punched his light out, violence (fists) is something one never forgets, so there's that hatred from deep inside that comes and is the reason I wrote a couple of comments yesterday, the miners of W Virginia, can you imagine a kid asking when his daddy's coming home? Hell the owner of this mine and I know he's been bribing people to get a judge elected, I would slit his throat with a rusty knife. This is a form of PTSD and I'm 61. To make a long story short is my life changed when I learned to speak English this guy who taught me had to force me and after four months he was showing me off to his friends and they took care of me handing me books asking me to discuss the books they were high school teachers one was an assistant teacher and researcher at the university without these people I might have remained the redneck anti-gay bigot I was destined to be.
By the way these people to whom I owe so much, they were all gay, it took me over a year to realize it, that was long ago and I'm not gay.
    Thank you.

The problem isn't that people change their mind once they get in the ballot box, the problem is that when confronted with a barrage of lies, then they change their mind. That's what a ballot fight, -every- ballot fight does.

Wow, I confess I've never heard that one before! Powerful stuff indeed. I'll respond with some Nina Simone:

Just to add some more information about a 2010 repeal. It seems the people gathering signatures were trying to cut costs by using Verafirma's signature-gathering software, which allows you to submit a signature using an iPhone. As it turns out, a judge just ruled that this type of signature is illegal under California election law. You can read about the decision in the SJ Mercury News ( http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14840… ).

If you count all the signatures gathered, you will get an unrealistically high number because the digital ones are not valid (subject of course to an appeal). The court ruling BTW was about a different initiative, but should apply to one attempting to repeal Proposition Eight as well.

Yes, fern, Ican imagine a kid asking when his daddy is coming home. I can also imagine the anguish of the family who lost three members in one fell swoop in this blast. And if I could do it and get by with it, I would do exactly what you say about the mine owner. And I am so gld that there were people who took the time to teach you English, even if they had to force you to learn it at first. I feel that the more languages we know, and the more we know about other cultures than our own, the better citizens we can be of this planet.

I wish that a prop to repeal 8 was on the ballot. I hope there is one every election on the cali ballots until prop 8 is repealed by either the court or the voters.

I'm leaning toward not wanting it on the ballot until after the Prop 8 trial finds its way through the courts. If marriage equality were to be reinstated in California by voter action, it would effectively bring the Prop 8 trial to an end.

If Prop 8 is struck down by the Court and the decision survives all stages of appeal, it could have a sweeping effect throughout the country. OTOH, if we're ultimately not successful in the courts, we can bring still bring it to a vote.

I also realize this shouldn't be up to me; I'm not in a position of watching the years tick by, waiting to marry the person I love.

    That's really encouraging news, Alaina.
