Let the Bigots Leave
March 25, 2010
by Brian Leubitz
Much has been made about DADT, and whether the army will be able to survive in tact. Or at least, much has been made of that from the Right. In reality, when there are no restrictions like DADT, other nations have fared remarkably well. There has been very little impact on the military, and soldiers just get used to it. But that would be additional normalization of our community, and that’s really what the Right is fighting.
But, President Obama and his commanders have let everybody know that they have an option if they don’t like serving with openly gay Americans: They can leave.
Mullen said if uniformed officers disagree with President Barack Obama’s call for a repeal, the answer for them is ”to vote with your feet.” (New York Times blog)
This arises in the context of one general, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, writing a letter to the Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper, asking his fellow bigots to let everybody know how ignorant they are. Traditionally, military officers, especially those close to, but not at, the top levels speak through their commanding officers, rather than going public with their positions on the issue.
In the letter Mixon wrote: “Now is the time to write your elected officials and chain of command and express your views. If those of us who are in favor of retaining the current policy do not speak up, there is no chance to retain the current policy.” (FoxNews)
Adm. Mullen, the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has had town halls with service personnel across the globe, and the issue just doesn’t come up. In the end, most of the military either doesn’t care that much about the issue, or they just want to end the charade. Leaders such as Colin Powell are also now speaking against the policy, now finally acknowledging what everybody has known for decades. There have been gays and lesbians in the military, and there will be gays and lesbians in the military. The question is whether you let them live their lives openly and honestly, in a manner that befits an American service member, or if you force them to lie about their personal lives.
President Obama has called for the repeal of DOMA this year, and for political reasons, that is even more important with elections looming. The next Congress might not be as friendly to our community. But instead of decisively acting, the President has been slow walking DADT repeal by waiting for a Pentagon study. Today they announced some changes around the margins in DADT investigations, but the heart of the policy remains solidly intact.
It’s time to quit studying already. Let’s join the bulk of our NATO allies and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. Not in 3 years, but now.

Yes, Brian, let the bigots and haters leave. Other nations have had these threats used, and in Great Britain for example, only three people left the service. So it probably would not be much of a loss to us. I live in a military town, just outside of Ft. Bragg, and the day after the first Congressional hearings where Admiral Mullen and DOD Secretary GAtes spoke about the need to repeal DADT, there was a poll taken at one of the local restaurants, and most of the people in this town are military, remember. The results of this poll? 95% said we need to end DADT and end it NOW! So why don't our top military leaders listen to the men and women who are actually out in the fields fighting for our rights and end this travesty?

Antigay D.C. Marriage Senate Amendment Defeated
Senator Bennett's health care bill amendment that sought to strip D.C. of marriage equality was defeated in a largely party-line vote.
By Advocate.com Editors
"In the early-morning hours of March 25, an amendment to the health care reconciliation bill proposed by Sen. Robert Bennett of Utah that would have stripped the District of Columbia of its recently enacted marriage equality law and forced a referendum was defeated by a vote of 59–36."
(me) bwaaaaaa…..talk about PWND……
"Only two Republican senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both of Maine, crossed party lines to vote against the amendment (a vote to keep D.C.’s marriage equality law intact). Two independent senators, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, also voted no. All Democratic senators present voted no."

Police: Man Killed Woman for Sleeping With His Daughter
By Advocate.com Editors
"An arrest warrant for a Connecticut man charged with killing a woman and stuffing her body in a freezer says he "flipped out" when he found out the woman was having an affair with his daughter."
(me) I ….. ummm….I can't….I'm going to throw up…..
"The Hartford Courant reports that 49-year-old Luis Otero (pictured) of Groton confessed to his sister Sandra William on March 7 that he had killed Madeline Brisson. Otero turned himself over to police a few hours later."
(me) again there's biological parenting love for you(not all bio parents but still is not a good example for bio parenting)…..
"According to the police report, Otero and Brisson were living together as roommates. Otero told police that on the night of the killing, Brisson had been drinking and accused him of not being able to properly care for his daughter, who is mentally challenged."
(me) the truth hurts and he went nuts….
"Otero then said Brisson told him the two had been sleeping together. According to reports, Brisson was out to friends and family and Otero knew she was a lesbian. Otero allegedly told police exactly where to find the body and said he’d left the lights on for the officers."
(me) how considerate of him to leave the lights on for the officers…yeah?
"Bail for Otero has been set at $2 million. His next court date is April 14."
(me)Can he get the D.S.?…….<3….Ronnie

I don't see these new rules about enforcement of DADT as a step forward. If anything, they just further entrench the policy within the institution.
Now, if they had adopted the standard for dismissal required by the 9th Circuit opinion in Witt v. Department of the Air Force or declared a moratorium on dismissals under the policy, I'd feel we'd made some progress.
15.
Ronnie | March 25, 2010 at 4:25 am
I agree kathleen….I say its Apples and Oranges…..They think by giving in this little snack of "well we will make it harder to discharge people based on DADT" that We are going to shut up…..but quite the opposite we have already said over and over again we will not stop until we get 100% Equality on ALL demands……we are not kids where they can give us little distraction and bide their time…..they are truly delusional…..<3….Ronnie

Sagesse | March 25, 2010 at 5:28 am
I'm encouraged by two things. First, they confirmed that this study is indeed about 'how' to repeal, not 'whether' to repeal. There has been some talk recently, including Sheehan's wishful thinking, that the conclusion could be 'don't repeal'.
Secondly, no one seems to think this first step is intended to sidestep changing the law. An executive order lets congress off the hook, but can be changed back with a stroke of the pen. They should just fold the two pieces of legislation now in the House and Senate into this year's Defense Appropriation Bill, with implementation pending the study, and be done with it.

This administration has done more for our community than any other and I am greatful, but we need to make sure that they understand that, it is STILL not enough!

Just read in the NYT that Obama asked congress to repeal DADT and rite now they made it harder to fire gays in the military.
I think Obama has found out that conciliatory talks with idiots was a waste of time and started to kick ass, he got a taste of it with the health care law.
I think no one will compare him to Jimmy Carter now.

Richard – Those would be the changes around the margins. It's worth noting that they made some changes to the DADT implementation, but they haven't really done anything about the core problem. You can still be tossed from the military for being gay, and until that isn't the case (even if it is a de facto moratorium) we can't let up on the pressure.

Update on the DC Marriage case. Oral arguments in the DC Court of Appeals case of Jackson v. District of Columbia have been scheduled for May 4 at 10 am (DC time).
I think the Court's website has the ability to listen to live oral arguments, but they probably won't be interesting to most people. This a challenge to the legitimacy of the DC law which prohibits voter initiatives that violate the DC Human Rights Act. So there likely won't be arguments about the merits of ss marriage, just a lot of discussion of how DC is allowed to modify its laws.
Just thought people might like to know what's happening with the case.

An update on the DC Marriage case, Jackson v. District of Columbia
Oral arguments are scheduled in the case in the DC Court of Appeals on Tues, May 4, 10am (DC time). I think the Court has a way to listen to live oral arguments, but it's not likely to be very interesting. The challenge is to the law which prohibits voter initiatives that violate the DC Human Rights Law. So you're not likely to hear any arguments on the issue of ss marriage, only administrative questions about how DC laws are enacted.
But thought I'd keep people updated.

Actually, ED-M, most of the hateros in the chain of command are slightly older than Baby boomers, and are holdovers from the educational system of the McCarthy era. Baby Boomers have actually helped bring about a lot of the changes that have incereased equality. For instance, one of the reasons I want LEGAL marriage is the fact that BZ was able to include me on his AAA for a slight extra premium, Farm Bureau let me be added to the auto insurance, and even AARP let him list me as his spouse there, so why is the government so far behind? Until we can get legally married, I cannot get health coverage without a separate policy, I cannot inherit the house if he dies before me, I cannot visit him in the hospital after certain hours, I cannot even relay his medical instructions. And that is only the beginning. Neither one of us can claim survivor's rights to the other's military disability. But wwe all need to MOBILIZE!
47.
Trevor | March 25, 2010 at 10:08 am
I did a little more research on this proposed amendment thinking that there must have been more to it. …And there wasn't, the amendment's purpose statement was, "To protect the democratic process and the right of the people of the District of Columbia to define marriage." This leaves me wondering, what the hell does this have to do with healthcare?!
Senator Bennett has the right to be a bigot, but he could at least have the balls to try and get this crap passed without sneaking it through with something completely unrelated.
48.
Kathleen | March 25, 2010 at 10:16 am
It was all about political posturing–basically just doing anything they could to delay the passage of the health care bill, while showing their extreme right base how they were willing to stand up for their (whacko) values.

The administration needs to be cleaned up for sure but cutting funding wouldn't fix the problem, it would just hurt the students that go there.
50.
Ronnie | March 25, 2010 at 10:22 am
As opposed to using tax money to hurt the few LGBTQQI students that go….no cut federal funding and let them care about their own since that is all they want to do anyway…..<3….Ronnie
51.
Trevor | March 25, 2010 at 10:44 am
That would just perpetuate the problem though. Cutting funding wouldn't suddenly protect the next LGBTQQI student from discrimination but rather disadvantage them and all the other students because a school without money can't operate. On the other hand, if you fire the superintendent, principal, and probably a few others, you have the opportunity to replace them with people that favor equality and will help shape the students for the future so that the students themselves don't grow into adult bigots.

Brian… the phrase that's been getting under my skin is "DADT supporters" — I'm glad you didn't use it.
There is no such thing as a DADT supporter. Arguments by the purported supporters, at their core, press for a ban, if not criminalization, of service by lgbt folks.
If anything, they are DADT deniers. Denying that DADT is a problem. Denying that DADT is not a solution. Denying that lgbt people are serving admirably.

When I served in the Navy, I was told that the military was a dictatorship. Not a democracy. We followed orders, we did not vote on them. That also applied to officers. The military itself is under the direct command of the President, and the rules and regulations passed by Congress. General Mixon knows that. If Congress wanted his opinion, they would have asked for it.

My big-haired cousin Debby, who lives in New Jersey town, announced on FB that she was going to get a "new look" after having her hair the same way for 15 years.
I am not making this up — she got a mullet.
Argh. Could you go to Stewartsville and set her right, LOL?
Love,
Fiona

PS — If I have to go to the gym every day, I will be dead (numerous sports injuries from ballet and horseback riding …)

I was surprised to read in a yahoo-AP article, that the end of DADT is more complicated because of the benefits and privileges allowed to the spouse in the military it looked like the writer never thought of the privileges involved. It is true I never read much about gay mentioning these benefits whereas to me they seemed the most important.
As for mixed Mixon, the military is split between 80% pencil pushers and 20% fighters and only the pencil pushers have so much time on their hands they can afford to be biased. Under fire there's no racism or homophobia.

Stewartsville? Holy S!! Lived in the town next to stewartsville for 7 years. Its a mashup of Staten Island and Arkansas. sad thing is I used to get my hair cut in stewartsville too. was able to resist the mullet look myself but breakfast at candy's country cafe was always an eye opener that NJ ain't quite as sophisticated as people think.

ROFLMAO! "A mashup of Staten Island and Arkansas" so perfectly describes my NJ relatives. :-/ It's kind of embarrassing.
Every once in a while, someone back there asks when I'm coming to visit (I haven't been there since childhood). I suspect I would be having both homicidal and suicidal ideations inside the first two hours.
Love,
Fiona

… all Republicans present supported the rights of DC residents to vote on same-sex marriage
That's funny. Like people have a right to vote on the civil rights of others. LOL. Not.
I guess all republicans aren't bad after all (Snowe and Collins). Still many more to convert

Ugh, "vote with your feet." I'll give 'em MY version of voting with my feet: kicking a bigot in the 'nads.
