One of the online classes I'm taking at college right now … the students are discussing civil rights, and I just brought up this site and the prop 8 trial re-enactment on youtube. I'm ready for an all-out fight, but hopefully people will see my view and leave it at that. I might watch an epic movie to get into fighting mode, just in case. Any suggestions? :p

It's been my experience (with far too many years in academia) that

    a) faculty & (to a slightly lesser extent) students tend to be pretty liberal and pro-LGBT, and

    b) students are actually pretty good at debating openly & honestly, when given the opportunity (and with a prof who's capable of guiding the discussion without being too heavy-handed). They (unlike many people in the political world) understand the need for respect in discourse.

If you are subject to abusive comments, take it up with the prof. Of course, if he/she is supposed to be moderating the discussion and you're subject to abuse, then it's a failure on his/her part and you might want to bring it up with the department head or your school's anti-discrimination people (most schools have someone who's supposed to investigate things like this).

Even with initial resistance, there is a chance that they will give additional thought to the issues.

Why can't heterosexuals just admit that they made a huge mistake.

That they demonized sexuality instead of violence, and now the entire world suffers for that mistake.

    Daily Bible Passage:

    Deuteronomy 23:1-2
A man with crushed or severed genitals may not enter the assembly of the LORD. A person of illegitimate marriage may not enter the assembly of the LORD.

We do need a different word – as a straight supporter, I don't want to be associated with that type of person.

  • 15. PDXAndrew  |  February 18, 2010 at 3:00 am

So, what constitutes an 'illegitimate marriage' as opposed to a 'legitimate' one?
    Love, Andrew

Anyone who wants to try and argue "tradition" should watch the short called "The Lottery." I know it is an extreme example, but there are many parallels to the "tradition" arguments.

    Here's part 1:

I copied the text from the NET Bible http://net.bible.org/bible.php?book=Deu&chapt…
which said, "A person of illegitimate birth." I used the alternative reading found in the notes, "A person of illegitimate marriage." That put the stigma on the marriage, not the child.

Regardless, it is still a translation of the Jewish word "manzar", which the KJV renders as "bastard". It can also apply to the offspring of incest, or the child of a prostitute. It most often refers to cases in which only one of the parents were Jewish.

That is an excellent dramatization of Shirley Jackson's classic short story.

  • 23. Ronnie  |  February 18, 2010 at 4:47 am

I like the Kerry Russell version…<3…ronnie

  • 24. Rightthingtodo TX  |  February 18, 2010 at 5:12 am

    how is it extreme?

i happen to be attracted to the opposite gender so i can't say from personal experience whether this is true or not, but i imagine that on a daily basis the LGBT community feels the hurt, pain and force of the "stones" of traditionalism

Marrying Britney "Oops I did it AGAIN!" Spears. Whether in Vegas or elsewhere.

  • 26. Richard Walter (soon  |  February 18, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Yes, we do. And it is usually the stones that are thrown by those who would misuse tradition and be guided blindly by only selected parts of tradition. Thank you, Rightthingtodo TX for understanding.
