Quick Hits: Day 3

There is a ton of excellent work being doing in covering this trial. Here are a couple of quick hits.
- The LAist has the letter from Dr. William Tam, which was introduced today and whose incendiary deposition was aired in part during Dr. George Chauncey’s testimony. The pro-Prop 8 letter includes this lovely gem:
This November, San Francisco voters will vote on a ballot to “legalize prostitution”. This is put forth by the SF city government, which is under the rule of homosexuals. They lose no time in pushing the gay agenda — after legalizing same-sex marriage, they want to legalize prostitution. What will be next? On their agenda list is: legalize having sex with children. I hope we all wake up now and really work to pass Prop 8.
Tam was supposed to be an official Defendant-Intervenor in the case, but he withdrew right before it began.
- Karen Ocamb over at LGBT POV has coverage of last night’s AFER press conference.
- Adam B over at the big orange satan, eeer, I mean, Daily Kos has substantial quotes from both the majority opinion by SCOTUS and Breyer’s dissent.
- The crew over at Fire Dog Lake continued their excellent live blogging and reporting. The wonderful Marcy Wheeler has joined Teddy in SF, aiding with the liveblogging. Hopefully, we will see some analysis from her too.

Out of curiosity, what is a Defendant-Intervenor?

The real defendant is Schwarzenegger/the California State Government. Since they opted not to defend Prop 8 themselves, Protect Marriage and Alliance Defense Fund have stepped in. Thus, they're team is considered "Defendant-Intervenors" because they are intervening in the defense.

Tam was going to be a member of that team but left because he was afraid of the harassment he'd get. It seems he's getting it anyway.

I hope that "Dr. Tam" realizes that he would be in an intermnent camp at the Santa Anita Race Track, when he were a boy. How dare he speak out about such things, with an air of superiority? Perhaps he could have an air of compassion, or authenticity, but to pretend to be a fundamentalist Christian? He would have been exterminated in Nazi Germany. How dare he have such audacity to speak as an authority in matters in which he would still be a non-person, if not given the right by open-minded, white christian californians, who had compassion on him and his people? The very idea. It is HIGHLY insulting to think a "commi" could now turn against the very people who liberated him, and who could also be his very own people, or, those who set him free. Incensing, the ignorance and arrogance. He would be a rat in a cage, had he not been liberated by other white Americans. How dare foreigners without rights pretend to be the nouveau bourgoisise. The very idea. I am from Pasadena. I can show you the interment camps in Arcadia which were appalling to my family. PS My Ancestors came to this country in 1548. 1548. WAY way way before the protestants who sought to impose their hillbilly religion on everyone else. I can prove it too. I have the book of my lineage. The very idea. Equal rights, and the pursit of life, liberty, and happiness, for EVERYONE, including the asians, and everyone else. How RUDE, hostile, primitive and low-class! My cousin was even governor of Georgia a few years ago. The very idea. HOW SMUG and condescending of the foreigners and commoners. We gave them everything they have, and then they act as though they are above it, and entitled. They had NOTHING, until we gave it to them. How RUDE. EVERYONE has equal rights. In America. RUDE!

Rude, hostile, carpet-baggers. That is what we're dealing with. Carpet baggers. The very idea. I am so ashamed for them, that they are so low, to not realize that everything THEY have and attained, was handed to them by our founding fathers, who were 80% white, anglo, magna carta, anglicans, who would today be called "Episcopalians." To think that 76% of our presidents of all the history of the US have been such, should make an impression on these people. Equal rights for every one. Every one. Not just them. Each and every person. Period. The very idea. Highly insulting, the audacity of arrogance and ignorance. It is the dog who bites your hand……. Hostile, Vulgar and rude.

I am sick to my stomach after reading "the letter" written by William Tam. It pains me to think I am living in a community with others that share his idiotic beliefs.

It is just unbelievable the logic they use to push THEIR agenda. The scary thing is, things like this trial won't be televised, which would be a great way to educate the masses. Let's face it, the opposition has the people's ears more than we do. That has got to change.

it's not really a link, but if trackers are feeling a bit helpless and want something to do while waiting for the next update, try searching for "yes on 8" on google video or youtube and flagging the video for hate speech and/or bullying. it might just feel good!
as the expert witnesses made clear, implying that gay marriage harms children is an extension of the fear-mongering gay hate campaigns of the past. it's all hate speech as far as i'm concerned.

I have been following the trial here, as well as a few other sites. Just now I decided to see the other sides point of view on the "Protect Marriage" site's blogs. They made me quite angry, as the blogs do not actually include dialogue, only a few quotes that are warped into what they want the meaning to be. For example, acting as if Chauncy said that all discrimination against gays had been gone for "decades" in California when really he said there was just less discrimination than in other areas, and forgotting to mention that some of the studies conducted evaluating gay relationships were done 20+ years ago and at a time when domestic partnerships were not yet around.
I'm hoping there is a 'yes on 8' site somewhere that includes actual dialogue, so that previous supporters of 8 will hear how the trial actually going and their opinions might change with new knowledge.

OK, Bill. Let me just tell you that:
Dr. Hak-Shing William Tam is Chinese, not Japanese. Therefore your reference to internment camps doesn't apply to him, since it was the Japanese solely who were put into the camps.
Also, when you write about the US Military "liberating" Dr. Tam, you seemed to overlook the reality that our military contained many more groups than "white Americans." And it still does.
